No sleeping at the Richmond

Bad (2.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 16, 2015

Wife and I booked into the Richmond to visit daughter living around the corner , original booking through Expedia arriving on the 20th December and departing on the 3rd January , I was most impressed with the host and the lovely old house, but having just flown in from the UK we went to bed around 9 pm intending to get an early start the next morning , but we were only in bed for 20 minutes when all hell broke loose next door the neighbors were having a Christmas party only a few feet from out bedroom window, well after an hour of this i went up stairs to talk to the boss who informed me that the council noise control officers were on there way to sort it out so back to bed i went but no change at all
So finally just after 11.30 pm I called a taxi which we shared with another guest who had also had enough and we went to another hotel i realize the predicament the Richmond was in and I understand from another guest that we met in the museum the next day that he did int get to sleep until after 3 am and that the council were called out twice to no avail but we had to look after ourselves ,

What a find

Excellent location, very clean and comfortable room good shower and hot water , free wifi, you also have access to a full kitchen if you feel inclined to cook, yes do your own dishes if you do so ( like at home) and no you are not required to wash your breakfast dishes ( there is a sign which says so ) This b&b offers exceptional value for the money , no its' not a 5 star hotel it doesn't pretend to be and neither does the price reflect that , but you will get a good clean room , with a nice shower and toilet ( ensuite ) with a great host in a very central location, plus brekkie''

Directions: setin a quiet residential area omly a short walk to thecity 5 to 10 minutes

Second time even better

This is my second visit to the Richmond Guest House, the first was nearly 18
months ago and i have to admit some changes have been made parts of the place
were a little bit tired looking , they had a big fire there and both john and
the building took quite a battering but john has done quite a lot of work
since my last visit , currently putting in awesome looking ornate plaster
ceilings improving the rooms etc' and all his exquisite figurines '' the
place is looking so cool , and he didn't have free wi fi last time either
Perfect location at walking distance from the City and well served by
public transport. Spotless and comfortable bedrooms; all with own
bathrooms great breakfast, Couldn't ask for more Barbara Rausch Ohio USA

Directions: A five minute stroll down to Courtney Place , what they call New Zealands entertainment centre
because Wellington is such a compact city , you can literally walk across the city in thirty minutes
which also means every thing is within walking distance

Well here i am sitting on my bed using my lap top and the free wireless internet at the beautiful Richmond
I was told about this place by another traveler who had stayed there previously so i knew what to expect , but even though i had been warned as with a lot of folk i was quite shocked when i was so graciously greeted at the front door by John the owner , the warning had been about Johns misfortune in being badly burnt in a fire that occurred there some years, one cant' say much but just to look at him and try to imagine him prior to his fifty plus operations and admire the guts and determination that it must have taken to get himself and the Richmond going again what a great job he has done on both counts ,And i have to be honest and say that i am really disgusted when i read some of the other reviews putting john and the Richmond down , get over it' John runs a great business so clean he also is a collector of beautiful antiques and porcelain figurines mainly European some of which are truly amazing and are all on show around the house, Well this is my third and last night here i have a great room a great room with fresh linen and lovely towels with my own bathroom with plenty of hot water and , value for the dollar this has to be tops out of eleven places i have stayed at so far $60 bed and breakfast for a room with its' own bathroom, so thank you john i know that you have another operation planned so god bless and keep smling Marylea Hopkins Pennsylvania USA

good place to relax

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)

Nice place, had all the comforts I needed after a few weeks camping in the bush: my own bathroom, kitchen, laundry, phone, tv lounge, free internet, free tea&coffee... brilliant! Clean rooms, good continental breakfast, nice staff, walking distance to the city.. what more can you want?!

best location in town

I found this place after a long day driving and only wanted to stay a night - I made 4 out of it! It's a beautiful location, close to beautiful Mt Victoria where I went for a walk avery morning. The city and all the sights are in walking distance, too so no hassle with parking etc.
The rooms are comfortable and clean, the prices are good and it's a laid back cosy atmosphere.

Like Coming home

I stayed in the Richmond's for a week and had a great time. John is a friendly, helpful host with a special sense of humor and he's always open for a good conversation.
The location is very good - quiet but also close to the city in a lovely area close to Mount Victoria. The rooms are spotless clean with pretty old furniture and nice bathrooms. Different to many places I stayed, I didn't feel like an anonymous traveler on the other end of the world but after a few days almost like a friend!

Unique Quality: I liked most the homely atmosphere in the place. I also enjoyed using free wireless internet and the clean, well-equipped kitchen.

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)

Basic B&B. Slightly run-down, but clean. No heating (I was there in winter). Basic breakfast: toast, cereals, coffee and juice.
The ad said 5 mins walk to city...hm, I'd make that 10. Well, 5 mins takes you to Courtenay Place, but you still have 5 more to go to get to the Civic Square.

Unique Quality: Great host (John) who taught me a few lessons on which qualities in life that are important.
Centrally located, but quiet.
