Smartcard for buses in Wellington

by craic

The Wellington Metlink site is quite good but i cannot find out where or how to buy a smartcard.

I have tried several corner stores and 24 hour convenience stores - no joy.

It is much cheaper to have a card and at the moment I have three 10 trip cards - for zones 1,2 and 3.

But like today I am going out to Eastbourne and that is zone 6 - which I would rarely go to so don't want to buy a 10 trip.

And how does a smart card work? Do you keep topping it up or what?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

The website says you can get them from the operator's bus drivers:

I have not tried it in Wellington but I think the Smartcard is what the Metrocard is in Christchurch. You keep on topping them up. So using the card is prepaying your travels, and that is why you get the 20% discount.

Travel Tips for Wellington

Civic Centre 2

by Kate-Me

I was rather pleased with this photo. If you blow it up, you'll see that I caught a photo of a woman crossing the square, just as her coat billowed out behind her. Maybe I was thinking of the Matrix but the coat was the wrong colour?
There were also buskers in the square, and chess being played on one grassy corner with huge chess pieces about 50 cm tall.

walking down the street never seemed complicated!

They have a kind of unwritten rule that you walk down the left hand side of the pavement, so if its a wide pavement, just make sure you're roughly on the left hand side if its busy or you'll be hitting a lot of oncoming traffic!

Indoor Rock climbing.

Here you can hone your climbing skills in relative safety. A 13 m high wall with an amazing overhang to try. They offer an easy lowskill climb or the most difficult for the experienced. Equipment is available for hire or purchase.

Marine Drive Tour

by vtveen

A really nice half-day 'off the beaten' drive. It is no longer than 30 km's, but is one of the most beautiful and varied coastal roads in New Zealand we have seen.

Starting point is the city centre/Te Papa Museum and we just followed the coastline. Starting with Oriental Bay we passed several small coves and sandy beaches. We enjoyed the views over the harbour and Cook Strait, seeing the ferries sailing in and out. We even could see the snowy mountains of South Island.

On the other side of the road there are wooden houses built on impossible places against the hills of Wellington. At Breaker Bay we just saw the sign for crossing penguins (not the penguins). Further on is Lyall Bay, very close to the runway of the airport. We finished our drive at Island Bay and returned to our accommodation Buckley Homestay in Melrose (see accommodation tip).

Back to downtown Wellingtion via the Happy Valley Road.
At Island Bay starts the so called Red Rocks Coastal Walk (4 km) to Owhiro Bay with a seal colony.

Going to the Theatre

by craic about Circa, Downstage, maybe Bats - Pics coming soon

If you are at a loose end, sick of going out drinking, weather is bad, nothing good on TV - try and pick up half price tickets for a play - go to the Information Centre in Civic Square after midday. Your chances are good because this opportunity is not well publicised.
Circa's standard is pretty good and I have seen two plays there very cheaply. And it is such a charming venue - very close to Te Papa. I think you can get tickets for Downstage too - which is in Courtenay Place. Now - that building is not charming. But it is protected because it is such a good example of the Brutalist school. Very very very ugly!
Bats Theatre is opposite Downstage - and it always has something on - prices are cheap so maybe they don't discount them (not sure because I haven't tried) but the standard is variable. VERY variable.
They have a lovely bar called The Pit just off their foyer - scrabble nights on Tuesday!
