Ok, the rain has set in, your tent is leaky, its time for a shower. Then head to the backpackers. These guys have a heap of options from Dorm rooms, Private rooms and Cottages.

It nestled on the trees close to everything. My night life tip is just a walk down the road.

There is nothing much here but some nice flat spots to pitch a tent. However, you do have the Waimak River right beside you, and some great views, and if you are really quite at night you might even hear a Kiwi.

Nothing much but there is a shelther with a fireplace. It's extremely cheap -- free.

  • Directions: coming from Christchurch, once you've past the Bealey Pub, and crossed the Waimak bridge then you are there. The Rest area is just before the road re-enters the bush.

We had booked in for a $25 per person cabin- very very basic- but after being soaked, cold and walking for 7 hours in the rain we decided to upgrade to the en suite room for $145 per night. The room was comfortable and had all the stuff we wanted- hot water, a heater to dry clothes, a comfy bed etc, but compared to what you get in other areas of New Zealand and Australia for the same price it was pretty average. A nice view from the window and a short walk to the main shop would be the best things about the place- as well a fireplace and pool table and bar downstairs.
