The Art Center
by kris-t
Absolutely nessesary to see that place..... I thing the spirit of the Christchurch lives here :))
When the University of Canterbury shifted to Ilam, local artist moved into the old "townsite" in Worcester Street, now known as the Arts Center. Lecture halls became studios, galleries and craft shops. Market Square houses the popularweekend market which draws many to these fine old Gothic styled duildings. Gothic stonework of former University campus converted into complex of over 40 specialty art and craft businesses and performance venues.
Festival of Flowers each year in February
by Kakapo2
The Festival of Flowers takes place every year in February and lasts 10 days. This year (2010) the dates are 19 February to 14 March.
Christchurch prides itself as the Garden City, and apart from the work of the city gardeners who look after the Botanical Garden and the other parks most of the people here love gardening and are proud of their gardens. The festival is a celebration of this passion. A little thing I like a lot during this time are the tramways decorated by flower reiths and even hanging baskets.
The Festival of Flowers boasts of a big selection of events, with the most popular feature of the Floral Carpet in the Cathedral, and Wearable Flowers Parades. Also on offer are garden tours to the parks and private gardens.
Once I was most impressed with an exhibition at the Botanical Garden which did not even include real flowers but big flags with wonderful paintings of the Guardians of the Gardens, done by artist Jane Davenport, fantastic impressions of insects and lizards, the flags dancing in the wind.
BTW The Ellerslie Garden Show has moved from Auckland to Christchurch but will keep its name. See extra tip.
High Street Kids for Peace Tiles
by ATXtraveler
Just off the Cathedral Square in Christchurch, is High Street, which diagonally heads away from the square in a Southeasterly direction. On this street you will find a small arcade with some beautifully hand crafted tiles, which are part of a greater Kids for Peace mural. Its only a few steps away from the square, but is often overlooked in your rush to see the other sites on the South Island. I would highly recommend taking 10 minutes away from your time in the square and come look at the great work by kids.
McKenzie Dog
by keeweechic
New Zealand's most famous sheep stealer, James McKenzie owned a dog named Friday. Both the Mackenzie County and the pass are named after him. McKenzie was apprehended at the Mackenzie Pass by an overseer for the Rhodes Brothers at Levels Station. His dog Friday drove approximately one thousand sheep towards Burkes Pass in 1855 from Levels Station. McKenzie was apprehended at the Mackenzie Pass by an overseer for the Rhodes Brothers at Levels Station.
Friday lived the rest of his years at Levels Station. The statue of the dog has become the symbol of pioneering sheep farming in the Mackenzie and sits on the shore of Lake Tekapo.
Door to Door Shuttles to and from the Airport
by Kakapo2
The most well-known of the door to door shuttles is the Super Shuttle. They run 24 hours and service every flight with every day fixed prices.
Those shuttles are cheaper than to take a taxi and more convenient than a regular bus or the Five Dollar Bus as they take you exactly to the address you want to go to and pick you up there as well. And - more important - the service is not limited to business hours.
The Super Shuttle is a national network, so you can also book it in other cities.
