Where can the wizard be found in Christchurch. I am off there in a couple of weeks. Thanks

by kiwi

The Wizard has retired, I'm sorry to report.

RE: Wizard

by jyzil

I was going to say... Is the wizard still alive.... he must be at least retired.

by kiwi

Yes he's still alive :-)) Or at least his passing hasn't been reported. But he's not really as old as he looked.

RE: RE: Wizard

The Wizard is not only still alive, he still comes to Cathedral Square in Christchurch on fine days. I have seen him just two or three months ago, since then I have not been on the Square during his work hours...

The Press had reported a year ago that he had retired when he bought a house in Oamaru but I have spoken to him since and he said this is ridiculous although he is spending time in his second home. But he is not on the Square every day. Normally only on weekdays, and I think he only holds his speeches when he feels in the mood for it, so definitely not when the weather is bad.

When the Wizard appears he normally arrives at about 1pm. His red VW Beetle with two front parts and two steering wheels is parked right beside the Cathedral. So if you see this extraordinary car the Wizard cannot be far.

Good luck!

Great news, thanks!!

RE: RE: Wizard

Yesterday the Wizard even participated in the Santa Parade in Christchurch, surrounded by many mini wizards. So even if he retires there will perhaps be someone who holds provocative speeches...

Now really the latest news: Spoke to the Wizard yesterday. He said that he does not plan to retire but only speaks on Cathedral Square from November to April and not in the case of rain.

I hope you have or do make a tip about this :-)

I have just done it! :-)

Travel Tips for Christchurch

Visit the I-site for all your travel questions.

by worldkiwi

The I-site information centre is located in the beautiful old central post office building in Cathedral Square. You can book activities and accommodation here and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I booked a day trip to Akaroa here. There are brochures and maps available to help you plan your time in Christchurch. The I-site is open from 0830 to 1700 daily except Sunday, when it opening and closing times are different.

Buskers' Festival

by rozehill

One of the highlights of the Christchurch summer is the start of the World Buskers Festival, which sees the public squares and malls of the city become the stage for talented performers from all over the world. The 11th annual New Zealand Community Trust WORLD BUSKERS FESTIVAL began on January 15 and runs for 10 days.

Festival Programmes available now from Arts Centre Info, City Council
Service Centres and City Libraries.

Take a drive out to Akaroa

by ATXtraveler

Akaroa is a small community about 75 kilometers from Christchurch, which is a former French and British settlement located inside an ancient volcano. We took a morning trip out to this beautiful little town, and did a bit of shopping. It is also known for its beautiful harbor where you can take a variety of different sea cruises or animal adventures such as swimming with dolphins.

For more information, feel free to visit my Akaroa page.

Cashel Street Mall

by fishandchips about Cashel Street Mall

Cashel Street is one of Christchurchs main shopping areas being a vehicle free zone (except delivery ones). Cashel St has everything from Ballantynes department store to brand name shops such as Nike, Sony and EB Software. There are options on music, jewellery and travel plus The Bog Irish Bar down near the Bridge of Rememberance. Around the corner from The Bog is Christchurch's strip with several bars and cafes, many open until the wee hours.

A couple of Arcades sit off Cashel st and each has its own collection of small stores and food options.

The beautifully restored trams follow a 2.5 kilometre loop around central Christchurch taking in some of the most interesting sites. These include Cathedral Square, Aquarium of Discovery, The Arts Centre, Botanic Gardens, Canterbury Museum, Punting on the Avon, Victoria Square, and New Regent Street to name just a few. Using the All Day pass visitors can hop on and off at any of the nine stops around the inner city tram loop and experience the inner city sights and attractions at their leisure.
