Anyone who has met me will know that I am very conscious of different methodologies of collecting airline and hotel frequent flyer miles/points. The reason I feel this is particularly important for me, is that in many cases, I can make a trip to a foreign land almost free, without having to live in a youth hostel. On this particular trip, my mother-in-law actually gets most if not all the credit for making our trip free, by saving up her Clarion points. The Chateau on the Park is affiliated with the American company, so for $0 USD, we had the opportunity to stay in this beautiful little accommodation before heading out on our wild drive through New Zealand's South Island. The accommodation was definitely nice, as rates would normally range from $120-250 NZD dollars based on peak or off-peak times. It had two comfortable queen sized beds, the showers and bath were working properly, and although the overall property was quite old, it was kept in good shape. There were a couple dining options, of which we did not participate, and there was plenty of parking up close. Overall, I would give this hotel a "very satisfied" for the money we paid (0) and also would have ranked it a "satisfied +" at a $120NZD a night price tag. | | | | Camelot Cathedral Square Hotel Christchurch: Camelot in Christchurch? Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
When some people look to get a hotel room, they search many websites, and plug in the addresses into Google Maps, to ensure they are right in the middle of the action. In downtown Christchurch, if you are looking for that spot, you have found it at Camelot. It is literally located in the Cathedral Square (technically across the street from it). This hotel was our choice for inexpensive accommodations on the last night before we flew out, so the modus operandi was to get an inexpensive hotel that would be easy to get in and out of quickly. The rates were reasonable, and there was not a four person supplement for a double bed room, so we were able to get away fairly cheap. The room was of good quality, and the bed was comfortable. If you are not going to have personal transportation in Christchurch, then this is definitely an excellent choice, as you are easily within walking distance of the tram, as well as a short walk from the Avon river, and plenty of good restaurants. | | | | Camelot Cathedral Square Hotel Christchurch: Great Location, Great Price! Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Camelot Cathedral Square is located right across the street from the most visited attraction in Christchurch - the Cathedral, and within walking distance to plenty of attractions, restaurants, and shopping. You can visit the website or call for pricing details and availability, but I got a double room in winter for about NZ$110.
Rooms are very spacious, with king and queen beds available. They come with a TV, refrigerator, coffee/tea facilities, internet connection, and very nice bathrooms. My room had a great view of the Christ Church Cathedral and Cathedral Square, but I broke the hinge on the window trying to open it to get a good photo. I was too nervous to tell staff, and ended up freezing that night because it wouldn't shut all the way. Oh well, the complementary electric blanket helped. | | | | Base Christchurch Backpackers: base Backpackers Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I arrived in Chritchurch on a late flight from Australia and so I had reserved this place right on Cathedral Square, the most central point of the city. The check-in went alright, though is not computerised so took some time to allocate a bed for me. I had heard great things about the new backpackers group Base Backpackers, but my stay wasn't as good as I had expected. The showers were terrible to say the least. It was clean, but the water pressure was terrible and at some stage no water would come out of the shower head at all!! The kitchen is horrible too, there are hardly any pans in the kitchen, and the hot plates have difficulties getting water boiled. But nothing can beat the location, and the rooms were pretty big, so I stayed here for a couple of nights anyway, to lazy to move to another place.
As said before the loaction is the hostel unique selling point, with if you;re lucky views of the Cathedral! Other than this there weren't any unique qualities. I have to say though that during my stay they were in a process of going from Star Times Backpackers to Base Backpackers. So maybe by now the quality of the hostel has improved a lot. At least Base promotes themselves as the best chain of backpackers around. The ones I stayed in in Auckland and Wellington were amazingly good, so I think they will put the standard of this hostel on a higher level too.
