Being both in peak season and being on a relatively tight budget, we had to book a budget place early. Bealey Avenue Motel came up on several searches as being among the lower priced hotel/motels.
Upon check-in, the mad was nice enough, but still rather formal. Upon check-out, I rang the bell for quite some time but no one came, so I simply left the key. I can't really comment on the staff since they were more or less invisible.
The building is relatively new, but designed specifically for the self-servicing motel. They were clean and comfortable enough, but on the Spartan side. The bathrooms were rather large.
Unique Quality: There was a small kitchenette and cable TV. Heater and A/C were available too. All rooms on the ground floor are handicap accessible.
Rate was cheap ($85NZD but usually $95NZD for 2 people), the service was awesome and they actually offer fresh towels daily. We actually stayed an extra night because of the location and quality of the room. Very happy with the comfort of the place and the price, given that this is the best place we have stayed at in NZ so far and the cheapest.
Unique Quality: The rooms have all been newly renovated with heating, new beds and bedding, double glazed windows, off street parking, WiFi, LCD TV, Stovetop, Microwave, guest laundry and only a short walk to the restaurant strip of Colombo street and town centre.
Directions: On Bealey Avenue not far from Manchester Street.
