Freezing conditions.. Antarctic Centre
by rozehill
The Visitor Centre International Antarctic Centre allows you to experience real Antarctic conditions with Audiovisual and Touch Screen technology. Feel "genuine" Antarctic wind chill or slide down a snow slope in the real Snow & Ice Experience. You can even dress up in real Antarctic Clothing and see live fish and sea spiders from Antarctica! Try the new Antarctic Hägglund Ride, a 'Behind the Scenes' tour of Christchurch's Antarctic Campus. During the ride passengers visit the US Antarctic Programme's Clothing Warehouse, Antarctic Departure Terminal and see the Antarctic Aircraft Apron. They then take visitors over an adventure course to experience the amazing all-terrain abilities of the Hägglund. Dare to drive over the 'Crevasse' and watch in amazement as it swims through water! Bookings for the ride are recommended
Hot Air Balloons
by rozehill
Christchurch's geography and climate are ideal for ballooning, they provide a unique situation where passengers can enjoy a superb view of the ocean, mountains and plains. As the sun rises, our flight takes us over a checkerboard of farmland laced with rivers, with the Southern Alps dominating the horizon to the west and the endless blue of the ocean to the east. After landing in a farmer's field, we relax and enjoy a glass of chilled Methode Champenois. Up Up and Away provides courtesy transfers from hotels for visitors staying in central Christchurch. New Zealand is one of the cheapest places in the world for ballooning, costing about 30% less than other countries.
Geraldine
by keeweechic
Geraldine is a quiet little rural town with a lovely village atmosphere. It is only 2 hours (136 km) south of Christchurch on the main highway to Mt Cook and Queenstown.
Lots of fresh air and open spaces and decidedly cold when we passed through very early in the morning.

THIS IS KAIKOURA. IT IS ABOUT A 5 HOUR DRIVE FROM CHRISTCHURCH. THIS IS THE MAIN SPOT TO GO TO IN NZ IF YOU WANT TO SWIM WITH THE DOLPHINS OR HANG OUT WITH THE WHALES. CAN BE PRICEY, BUT WELL WORTH IT IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN BEFORE.AND DON'T THINK THIS IS A PLACE TO PARTY, NOT MUCH TO DO HERE. VERY QUIET....
Suvlaki: fresh lamb = good times
by drew_RTW about little Greek place on Manchester St.
Restaurant worked by a really friendly Maori woman. Food was delicious! Suvlaki is like a gyro: pita bread, lamb, beef, or chicken, vegetables and a cucumber sauce. Delicious and perfect for "after a few beers" snack. Lamb suvlaki: New Zealand is known for its sheep...and the fresh lamb makes a big difference.
