Schools

Schools in Cristchurch look so nice.
This one is near The botanical gardens.
It's Christ's College - a private secondary school for boys run along English public school lines. Since 1857 this college has been the training ground for many of Canterbury's "sons of the land", but today its pupils are from varying walks of life. The college's magnificent buildings on Rolleston Avenue include some of Christchurch's oldest and finest architecture.
Don't forget the bus driver.
by knerten
People in Christchurch are usually very friendly and accomodating to foreigners asking strange or stupid questions, but here's something about the way they are friendly among themselves so to speak:
When people get off the bus, they say thank you to the driver. Not only a silently mumbled thanks when they happen to pass the driver at the front, and only the driver can hear it, no, when they get off at the back door, people will yell it to the front and maybe even do a hand wave. Cool!
So, usually, you say thanks or thank you, and the bus driver goes cheers mate, or you go cheers and the bus drivers says thanks.
I like this custom. Everybody does it, young and old, except maybe for foreign students. It's weird, but it makes me smile every time.
Rugby for all
by fishandchips
Rugby is a sport played in NZ by all ages - starting from age 4 until the time that you can't run anymore. In a recent golden oldies tournament an Argetinian player was 93 so just goes to show that age is no barrier. That's my 5 year old niece in the photo racing off to score yet another try - she was player of the season in her team (4 to 6 year olds). You'll need boots and flair to play our national game
Lake Tekapo
by keeweechic
Lake Tekapo is a beautiful lakeside town which is a popular rest stop when traveling between Christchurch and Queenstown. The main attractions are the spectacular views of Mt Cook as well as some very scenic hiking paths which include a three hour walk to Mount John Lookout.
Located midway between Christchurch and Queenstown in the heart of the Mackenzie Country.
Buying a Car
by fishandchips
The Backpackers Car market is apparently a good way to find a car in your price range if wanting to buy a car to do your trip around NZ. Included are mechanical checks and ownership history so you know what you are getting (to a point!). Stuff like 3rd party insurance (you have an accident & your cover covers any expense for the vehicle etc that you have hit) and change of ownership paperwork can also be sorted out here.
The market is located on Battersea St which is on your right after going over the Colombo St overbridge toward the Port Hills.
