Reviews are for wrong Hotel/Motel
Several of the reviews here are for the Camelot MOTEL in Papanui NOT THE FLAG HOTEL IN THE SQUARE.
Don't these people even know where they stay.
The square and Pap road do look a bit different even before the earthquake

Camelot in Christchurch?
When some people look to get a hotel room, they search many websites, and plug in the addresses into Google Maps, to ensure they are right in the middle of the action. In downtown Christchurch, if you are looking for that spot, you have found it at Camelot. It is literally located in the Cathedral Square (technically across the street from it). This hotel was our choice for inexpensive accommodations on the last night before we flew out, so the modus operandi was to get an inexpensive hotel that would be easy to get in and out of quickly. The rates were reasonable, and there was not a four person supplement for a double bed room, so we were able to get away fairly cheap.
The room was of good quality, and the bed was comfortable. If you are not going to have personal transportation in Christchurch, then this is definitely an excellent choice, as you are easily within walking distance of the tram, as well as a short walk from the Avon river, and plenty of good restaurants.

Very central hotel
The people were friendly enough and there was valet parking (at a price). The restaurant was also good but the room let the place down. Although large and with a wonderful view of the square, it was filthy. We couldn't walk barefoot to the bathroom as the carpet was so stained. Early in the morning, there was a lot of noise as the street cleaners and rubbish collectors went about their business. Would not atay there again Pamalula Plymouth UK

Central location but not comfortable
Very big room but no AC (there is heating in the room). On a hot summer day with no breeze and on the 1st floor, we had to leave the window open with much relief. The central location became a 'negative' point as the lights and traffic noise (well into the night), wouldn't allow you to sleep/rest after a hectic day of sight seeing. The hotel management told us they couldn't organise a table fan at short notice.

Very Helpful Staff at Reception
Didn't stay at the Hotel (they were full except for smoking rooms) but the staff at reception were incredibly helpful in assisting me to find a room in another hotel. It was much appreciated - and even the smoking room I did take a quick look at was large, roomy and clean. If my wife didn't suffer from astham, I'd have stayed, smoking room or not - and the location right on the Square is suberb. Looks like good value for money.

Gracious living...
Our room is quite something though: we've got a suite. A large living room with a dining table, two chairs and a settee, breakfast bar and kitchen. Lovely wooden steps leading up to the upstairs bedroom, which is in the turret of the tower wing - this is all medieval King Arthur architecture.
Unique Quality: A lot of people in our group do not like this hotel, they say it is dirty and the food is no good. Our room is clean enough, and I think the food is superb. Admittedly, the service and organisation is diabolical, but.....

A fantasy world
I have to confess my first impression is "naff". New Zealand seems to have a fashion at the moment to paint their homes in clashing colours - purple, green and pink for instance, as is this hotel - a la Disneyland!

Great Location, Great Price!
The Camelot Cathedral Square is located right across the street from the most visited attraction in Christchurch - the Cathedral, and within walking distance to plenty of attractions, restaurants, and shopping.
You can visit the website or call for pricing details and availability, but I got a double room in winter for about NZ$110.
Unique Quality: Rooms are very spacious, with king and queen beds available. They come with a TV, refrigerator, coffee/tea facilities, internet connection, and very nice bathrooms.
My room had a great view of the Christ Church Cathedral and Cathedral Square, but I broke the hinge on the window trying to open it to get a good photo. I was too nervous to tell staff, and ended up freezing that night because it wouldn't shut all the way. Oh well, the complementary electric blanket helped.
