Statues (1): William Rolleston

-
William Rolleston was the fourth and last Provincial Superintendent of Canterbury (1868-1876). He arrived in 1858 and was involved in all aspects of political and community life.
His statue is situated in Rolleston Avenue outside the Canterbury Museum, next to the entrance to the Botanic Garden, facing the Arts Centre which at Rolleston’s time was the university.
Rolleston was the political architect of the museum and the university as well.
The marble statue was erected in 1906. It was sculpted by the English sculptor Herbert Hampton.
Safe Cycling
by Kakapo2
I have listed some areas where you can cycle safely in Christchurch in extra tips (most as Off the Beaten Path tips), like Mc Lean’s Park Forest, Bottle Lake Forest Reserve, and the Little River Rail Trail. See in my Warnings and Danger tip why cycling is so dangerous in the city.
You will find an incredible lot of mountainbike tracks around the city. To my taste, there are not many tracks for people with limited abilities but a fabulous choice for advanced mountainbikers. Since a lady mountainbiker fell to my feet after riding over several rock steps in the Port Hills I have become rather cautious about where I cycle with my mountainbike and where not.
When I saw the guy with the bike on New Brighton Beach you see on my photo I thought that is a fabulous idea for cycling in Christchurch ;-) You are not only safe from rocks and car drivers, you can also watch wildlife, and if you fall you fall softly ;-)
It's not really off the beaten...

It's not really off the beaten path, but when your in Christchurch there are a couple of places that you should really go to complete the whole trip. 1 is Akaroa, this is a town that was first settled by the French. It's about an hour or so drive from Christchurch and is just a fascinating wee town. All the streets are actually rues ie: Rue Lavaud. There are some really cool boutique shops, cafes, and some pretty good restaurants, I would probably advise staying a couple of days if you've got time. Also, on your way through to Akaroa from Christchurch, you pass a place called Barry's Bay, this is almost directly after you've complete the big hill descent, you'll know it when you get there! There is a cheese factory there that has some awesome cheese, oh yeah, and don't forget the Akaroa Winery! Definite must!
# 2 is Kaikoura. Kai is food in Maori, and Koura can roughly be translated as Crayfish in Maori...and this is what Kaikoura is famous for....food Crayfish...lots of it. Kaikoura is about 2-3 hours North of Christchurch...just follow state highway 1. Kaikoura is not only known for Crayfish, but is also known for Swim with the Dolphins, Whalewatch, and a lot of people go diving around the area. It is also probably one of the South Island's surf mecca's with Kahutara, Maungamaunu, Meatworks, Graveyards and a few other surfable breaks...Kahutara and Maugamaunu possibly 2 of the more well known breaks but Meatworks is by far the most grunty...short rides, and usually you'll be contending with some pretty high caliber surfers. Maungamaunu is probably New Zealand's second best point break after Raglan.
Just some general info anyway!
Ministry
by fishandchips about Ministry
Ministry, located in Lichfield St, has been at the forefront of the nightclub scene for quite some time. With a mix of local and internal DJ acts the place normally goes off most weekends. It is quite a large place once you are inside and after around 1pm the place is jam packed with party people - generally a bit on the young side depending on the music being played.
Most of the time there is no cover charge however if there is an international act expect to pay up to $15 to get in the door. As is normal with nightclubs, buying drinks is more expensive than your local boozer so be prepared to pay a little more. It's open from 10pm to 6am. Casual
Food all over the world
by FOotFetish about Art Center Foodstalls
It's just a place to try out different types of food culture all at one spot. I had a potato spud - large boiled potatoes and you can choose the toppings eg, mushrooms, bacon, sour cream, beef ...etc/
Something more economical and filling up your tummy.
