Ibis

The Ibis is one of the newest in Christchurch built in June 2007 on land in front of the Telecom building in Hereford St. It has direct access to the Visitor Centre (when open) so a real snip when looking for holiday ideas. Being in Hereford st it is in the middle of town so close to restaurants and clubs when you want a night out and all of the shops when you want a bit of retail therapy.

The hotel has rates from $94 and all of the facilities you'd expect of a major chain hotel. It has 155 rooms with various set-ups and a nice bar area with outside seating situated on the 1st floor - views are over Hereford St so nothing to get too excited about.

More about Hotel Ibis Christchurch

Typically Ibis - Excellent

by TripAdvisor Member Radarz

Located in the heart of Christchurch business district on Herbert Street. We arrived late at night after an evening flight from Melbourne, Australia. The staff on the desk were helpful and alert even though it was after midnight NZ time and our reservation was ready as was our room. The room was typically Ibis, in that it was a relatively small room, but well appointed and clean and new. We could have been in any Ibis in the world from what I have seen of other Ibis Motels as they all seem to be of the same standard, the McDonalds of Motels, you know exactly what to expect and you know what you are getting. Unfortunately we had to be on the move early, but what we saw and read about the Ibis Christchurch would definitely make us stay there again. Our room overlooked the street where the locals were busy going about their daily business and is a short walk to the business and retail centre of Christchurch.

Fantastic!

Ibis Christchurch was absolutely fantastic - it could not be any more central, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the rooms were small but luxurious.

Very impressed and would definitely stay here again! I wish everywhere we stayed on our trip had been this good.

It was also fantastic value for money too, because it was such a great experience :-)

Great Value, Clean Rooms, Friendly Staff, Very Central

by TripAdvisor Member Newlyweds0707

After reading the reviews on this site I cancelled my booking with Rydges then booked the Ibis Christchurch and was very glad that I did.

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights - 6 July 2008 to the 9th July 2008. The room was very clean, comfortable and warm. We were located on the 5th floor and had a nice view of the mountains. The hotel is located in the heart of the city which was fantastic because we didn't need to hire a car. Everything was in walking distance. The hotel reception staff and cleaners were helpful and friendly and the lobby warm and welcoming.

The only problem we encountered was that you could occasionally hear the plumbing at night and people on the floor above - which I imagine would happen in most buildings.

We paid $73 Australian p/n which was wonderful considering Rydges wanted $180 p/n - ($220 if we wanted breakfast).

I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again. It was fantastic value and very central.

Great Location and value

My wife and 2 children (9 and 11) stayed at the Ibis Christchurch in Jan 2008 for 1 night at each end of our recent trip to New Zealand. A total of 2 nights. Upon picking up our rental car from the airport we were warned that the hotel did not have parking. This proved a difficult situation to manage during our stay as the Hotel is located right in the centre of town. Upon arrival we had to park illegally and un- load. There is a 10min loading zone outside but its often full. I then had to drive around to look for a parking space on the street and ended up parking over 1km away in a metered zone. Not a good start. I had to leave the car on the street overnight.
Upon our return for the second stay we were prepared and placed the car in a parking station overnight for around $15. Hotel staff do not seem to understand the difficulty visitors face if they have a car and seem to be reluctant to give advice.

The hotel was excellent in every other way and met all expectations. Location was excellent next to the main square. Check in was swift. Hotel was almost new and rooms very modern and compact. We had 2 double beds. Not much cupboard space but adequate for a night or 2. Cable TV was good. Would certainly stay again. We paid less than $NZ100 a night and I thought that was great value as most youth hostels cost more than that for a family of 4.

Great stay!

We stayed at the Ibis 2 nights beginning & ending an economy type 10 day bus tour. It was the best room we had on the tour. It reminded us of the Novotel in Manhattan. The contemporary rooms are tight with 2 double beds but the beds were firm with good linens & pillows. They were the most comfortable beds we slept in & we stayed in 19 different NZ hotels in 24 days of travel. The rooms have A/C making them comfortable with less street noise. The bathrooms are still newish & very clean, as was the entire room. As noted elsewhere, it is literally around the corner from Cathedral Square & very convenient to sights, shopping & restaurants. Although our room was not ready for early check-in, the staff was very accommodating, helping us put our bags into storage arriving and leaving. The 2 elevators were quick, & we never had to wait long for one. The buffet breakfast was good & typical of those we got everywhere in NZ but with a very slow espresso machine that made great coffee & all you can drink! Our 3 course farewell dinner in the very contemporary restaurant/ bar was good with some dishes like the salmon getting better reveiws. The outdoor bar/terrasse is fitted with overhead heaters, making it a popular after dinner site. Bar prices were standard for NZ & the bartenders were friendly. It is a popular hotel right now with bus tours, especially German & American. Despite all the people milling around in the lobby early morning & late afternoon, reception was always pleasant & organized.

Noisy Night

by TripAdvisor Member Bravia

We stayed for a three day break over the Easter holiday and requested a smoking room (on the 2nd floor), which was all fine, apart from the view out of the window to the wall of the next door building, but hey Ibis cheap and cheerful $114 a night we really didn't mind. Normal Ibis, always can be relied on to be clean and tidy with bright modern reception, just room seemed a bit glum due to having little natural light.

Great location and easy few paces to walk through the alley beside the hotel and you are in cathedral square and all that Christchurch has to offer.

Our nightmare began at approx midnight on the first night, when our friendly neighbours decided they were having a party out in the landing outside our room. The whole floor seemed to be occupied by a party of young students on a weekend booze fest and they had congregated inside and outside their mates rooms. I opened our door to ask them to keep the noise down, to find several young lads as drunk as skunks, sitting on the floor drinking beer, so I rang reception and asked them if there was anything they could do about the noise? They sent someone up to have a look and it all went quiet for a while, as the guys and gals just all piled into the room opposite us. So ten minutes later, doors are slamming, screaming, shouting and giggling continues. It went on all night and I went out to them three times to ask them to keep the noise down.

Anyway we hoped it was just a one off and that all would be back to normal the next night. Hmm, big mistake! Same time, same place and the party was on again. This time I went down to reception myself to complain and they said they had already been up there and the noise wasn't excessive, so I ended up asking them to move us to another room. So there we are at midnight packing up and moving up to the fourth floor...

Shame on you Ibis, although we were relieved to get away from the noise and everything was fine with the second room, surely we weren't the only ones affected by all this noise and you let it carry on. No signs of any security staff, just young girls on the reception who are hardly likely to be able to take control of a drunken rowdy bunch of idiots.

Shame on you that you can let your guests move rooms in the middle of the night, rather than deal with a major problem. Not of your doing or your making, but surely you should have some kind of policy over noise and invest in some staff who can deal with a potentially dangerous situation.

Awsome!!!!

Having stayed here previously i knew what to expect, as usual it was a great place to stay!!!!!

The staff are really helpful... the service is what you would expect from a nicer hotel.. the only thing is that they dont have parking availalbe for hotel guests!!!!

Apart from that, great place, great staff, great stay!!!!!!

Excellent Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member ocalllo

I stayed here for 5 nights in June, i booked through the Hotel Website direct and got a great rate.
I had a beautiful large clean king size room on the 6th floor, with views out over the hills.
the staff were extremely nice and helpfull. There is a nice bar/cafe on the first floor, altho i didn't get to eat there.
This is by far the best Ibis i have ever stayed in and would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

Unexpectedly good

by TripAdvisor Member dootsiez

Surprisingly this turned out to be one of the best hotels we stayed at in NZ, it excelled out expectations. Facilities were new, the room decor was cozy. Beds were comfortable, the room was spotlessly clean. The reception staff was very helpful. What more can you ask for?
