A Perfect Wedding Day at Langdon House

by TripAdvisor Member Foreigner_in_London

We came to New Zealand to get married in November, and had Langdon House as our first stop. John and Annie were
wonderful hosts, with plenty of useful advice of what to do and where to go. Since we came on our own, with no wedding
party, I asked Annie and John if they could suggest somewhere for us to go to have our wedding breakfast, still dressed up. John and Annie were so wonderfully kind and offered to cook it themselves, which was something they didn't normally do. On our wedding day, they also let us use their beautiful garden to take several stunning wedding pictures. They then actually made a specal menu for us, with food out of this world, and joined us for our wedding breakfast. They (and Donna from New Zealand Dreamweddings) really helped us make our wedding special, and just the kind of wedding day we wanted. For the total of 4 nights we stayed there, they provided 100% top-notch service. They even had the patience to wade through our 180, or so, wedding photos the day after the wedding(!). If we ever go back
to Christchurch, we will most definitely stay at the wonderful Langdon House again. Oh, and the rooms are lovely too, with divine beds.

Excellent

Our short stay at Langdon House was a wonderful treat and I congratulate John and Annie for creating such a fabulous place to stay. The accommodation was outstanding and the service unmatched. Langdon House has become the 'gold standard' against which I will judge other hotels in the future.

Langdon House, Christchurch, NZ

by TripAdvisor Member bessie_evelyn

We would recommend Langdon House to anyone as it was such a pleasant experience to stay there. The hosts, John and Annie were so welcoming and friendly, and the accommodation was definitely 5 star. The house is located in a pleasant, quiet area with a lovely park next door. It is set in an expansive garden and has the feel of a very comfortable home.
We liked the fact that it is not far from the centre or the airport and is easy to find on a map.

Tranquility amid the madding crowd

by TripAdvisor Member Traveltheglobewish

Set in a lovely garden Langdon House is the place to stay not too far away from the city. Our hosts, John and Annie were just wonderful and welcoming.
The Ashley Suite was most comfortable with its kingsized bed & kingsized single bed. The decoration was neutral. The blockout roller shades and curtains made for privacy & coolness during the hot days of our 10 day stay. Ensuite facilities were streamlined and modern. Plenty of storage space and provision made for making your own cup of tea/coffee - first class.
Very pleasant too, to wake up to bird song.
Guest lounge and dining room were very comfortable with views to the garden via the big windows & sliding bi-fold doors.
Upon arrival John presented us with a complimentary DVD composed of photos he & Annie had taken around NZ.
Afternoon delight came in the form of complimentary drinks and nibbles (quite scrumptious) made by Annie. Futher delight in spending time with their guests and pleasent interaction was a highlight as an exchange of information/experiences allowed guests to share their pleasure of travelling NZ. John & Annie's suggestions regarding places to dine in Christchurch were helpful as was the list of restaurants which offered a 20% discount given to each guest.
Breakfast was a gormand's delight. John and Annie's emphasis on all natural foods was a unique experience for us. The Venison and poached egg stack was heavenly, as indeed the other menu choices.
Professional, warmly courteous service was at the forefront with John and Annie. It was a joy to be welcomed into their B&B, a business but also a home.
We heartily recommend Langdon House to anyone seeking accomodation in Christchurch of this standard (*****) and we certainly look forward to a return visit next time we come to Christchurch.

Perfect Ending To An Amazing Holiday

by TripAdvisor Member LassiefromScotland

Christchurch was going to be our last destination prior to flying home following a month in New Zealand........ what were we looking for? Accommmodation offering relaxing surroundings, friendly and helpful owners, a good sized room with quality furnishings and an excellent selection on the breakfast menu.....and we ticked all the boxes for Langdon House. In addition we can't forget to mention Annie's home baking and John's Cheese and Wine at 6pm, where every possible assistance is provided with an excellent knowledge of restaurants and places of interest. We had decided to give up our hire car for the last few days but it was great to hire John's MR2 to get us outwith the city centre. We spent Christmas Day with Annie and John and four other guests. An excellent breakfast brunch started the day and Annie had kindly prepared a picnic lunch if you wished and then we all met up again for Christmas lunch. We did have reservations about spending Christmas lunch with six strangers but as we did not get up from the table until five hours later there was no need for this. Excellent food once again and of course great company. Don't miss Langdon House from your holiday accommodation list or you will have missed out on something very special - five stars without a doubt and Annie and John work very hard to ensure their standards don't slip.

Really is a special place to stay!

Just returned from a 4 week trip around New Zealand which we started in Christchurch at Langdon House. We spent three nights with John & Annie. We can give them no less than full marks for making us feel very welcome, for the standard of accomodation, for the fantastic breakfasts and for their help and advice. Of the sixteen places we susequently stayed in, we can truly say this was the best!

Fantastic place to stay

by TripAdvisor Member Frequent_travLon

We had a fantastic three nights at Langdon House Jan 07. The suites are superb, and it's clear that John and Annie have put a lot of thought into all the little 'extras' that really make for a great stay. John and Annie made us feel very welcome, and couldn't have done more to ensure that we enjoyed our stay.

home away from home

As a regular visitor to Christchurch from the North Island this was a gem of a discovery and we will be back, a lovely big suite with large and comfortable bed, a very well appointed bathroom and a nice balcony overlooking the pleasant gardens in a very quiet area, half way between airport and downtown. Thoughtful and considerate hosts who provided an excellently varied and tasty breakfast and the complimentary happy hour at 6pm is a great touch, with opportunity to talk to fellow guests from all around the world. Some of our friends are already booked in.

Wish we could have stayed longer.

by TripAdvisor Member lizkiwi

Of all the places we stayed in the South Island, this was our Number 1. This is a really nice place to stay, and it does feel very homely - you are free to interact with the hosts or do your own thing. John made us feel very welcome, and gave us lots of tips about the local area. Nice big bedroom, and there is a fridge in the dining room, with wine, beer and softdrinks which is on a help yourself basis (all included in the price). The house is about 7 or 8 minutes from the city centre, so it feels secluded, but is only a short drive away to all the major attractions. Breakfast is an experience to savour, with a lovely selection of cooked breakfasts (they are keen cooks), as well as a plentiful cold selection, much of which is organic. We would have liked to stay longer but sadly had a tight schedule to stick to. If we are in Christchurch again, we would definitely stay here again, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a luxury experience.

The Best B&B in Christchurch!

by TripAdvisor Member TorontoTravelator

Langdon House exceeded our expectations in every way. It is beautifully furnished, with exceptional attention to detail. Everything was thoughtfully provided to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay--even when we were (happily) housebound one very rainy
afternoon. We stayed at many very good B&B's during our five-week, 5,000km New Zealand driving trip and Langdon House is right at the top of our list. We look forward to a return visit! V.W., Toronto, Canada

anyone stayed in Christchurch City YHA

by ascend88

Hi all,

Pls advise....is the YHA any good? or are the other better choice?

pls help...my budget is around 120nz$

Re: anyone stayed in Christchurch City YHA

by pyyeung

I stayed City Central YHA, TWICE in early 2003 and they missed my reservation TWICE. I can only say that the resevaton "system" is very confusing. You had better reconfirm it ALWAYS. Except that, everything is OK.

Hello!

I stayed at the YHA Rollestone House and thought it was fine. Not as new and fancy as the other YHA, but it is better situated (that's what I think).

I always paid my next night at the YHA I stayed in (the night before), very convinient and I din't need to hassle with any bookings.

Good luck, and have a nice trip!

thanks...what u guys think of Base backpackers in CC?..

Re: Re: anyone stayed in Christchurch City YHA

I stayed at YHA Rollestone and had a fab experiance. The hostel is located jz beside the Botanic Gardens and the staff really make you feel like your part of the family (check out my Chc tips). If you are a YHA member.. the room rates are starts from NZD21.00 .. which is cheaper than the city centre YHA as well.

Cheers!

I stayed at base Chch in February and didn't like it at all. They were in the process of changing from Startimes Backpackers to Base, so maybe things have improved now. The room I had was pretty big with only 2 bunks. There was also a fridg in the room. The kitchen was cramped and not working very good. The pressure in the showers was awful. As i mentioned before things might have changed since base promotes themself as high quality backpackers. Sorry I can't be of more help...

RE: anyone stayed in Christchurch City YHA

by mrkyle

nah bro, base and the city YHA aren't worth it. the rolleston one is rockin.
Its 5 mins walk from city centre, and across the road from the court theatre, the arts centre, and on the other side is the botanical gardens, and my old school, christs college. its a boarding school, and is based on the architecture of oxford or cambridge uni, not sure which. it has all bluestone buildings, and is a tourist attraction in itself. and if youre poor, and look young, you could easily scab a free meal, just say youre the new exchange student. anyways, the YHA has this rather wide bloke working there called ferg, hes a bit mean, so avoid him. the rest of the staff are all champions.
