New Zealnd's worst
While the rest of Christchurch is busy putting the damage of the last earthquakes behind itself, this place has decided to happily fall apart. No one cares. The cracks and color snippets run all over it, the carpets smell awful, the showers are rusty and rotten, the matrasses sagged, windows don’t open or don’t close etc.
During our stay of not even 24h, fire brigade came here no less than 3 times. No staff around, just a very drunk Irish woman knocking on doors to tell people to not throw any cigarette butts out the window!
Complained in the morning to same Irish woman, watery-eyed and reeking of booze, no money back for poor night’s stay, got credit-card thrown at us, even accused of setting a palm tree on fire!
The Excelsior is bad news for anyone who wants a decent stay, a good night’s sleep and friendly service for your money while visiting Christchurch.
Unique Quality: bad smells, drunk & rude staff, cracked walls, saggy matrasses

Good Cheap Accommodation
The front staff are soooo helpful and nice. Everyone who worked there was really friendly and was always up for a chat. It has internet (i think its $2 per 20mins) its got a kitchen to cook, a lounge to chill out and watch tv and a patio to go outside to get some fresh air.
The single rooms were basic but cool. They have a comfy bed, basin and mirror in the room. You shouldn't be inside if your travelling - its only to sleep. :-)
Unique Quality: It's cheap but good accommodation. Its right in the heart of the city and close to the clubs. Some hostels look good on the net and sometimes dont really work out to be nice. This isnt one of those. It looks good on the net and it is a great place.
I will stay there again!

not the best place, but not the worst either
We stayed at this hostel when we returned to Christchurch after touring the South Island, as a friend of ours was also staying here. To be honest, some of it's a little on the shabby side, but it's a pretty friendly place, it's well equipped and the location's good. Our dorm was very small, sleeping six people, and there wasn't a lot of space to put our stuff, and there weren't any lockers for our valuables. Bathrooms were shared, and OK but not great.
Unique Quality: Facilities include a large kitchen, a living room with tv and video, a nice outside deck area on the first floor, laundry and horrendously over-priced internet access! Downstairs there's a travel desk in reception, and a bar/cafe.

Nice hostel
Nice place to stay
Reception very friendly and willing to help
Double rooms nice, have a sink which is handy. Clean and warm - NZ$52 a night.
Really close to the Cathedral square only about 5 mins
Bar downstairs and lots of wee restaurants nearby to grab breakfast or dinner
Only about 4 computers for e-mail on a timer system.

Christchurch Hostel
We stayed here for a number of days and loved the place. It was very clean and reasonably priced too.
Great location near to Cathedral Square and would highly recommend the place.
