A Wide Variety of Accommodation by the Arts Centre

by written on June 18, 2008

Update March 2011

Thomas's Hotel has been damaged in the February earthquake and is just inside the current cordon of the CBD. So this accommodation is not available. Additionally the Thomas's website does not work at the moment.

This is a very popular hostel/hotel in the city centre thanks to its fabulous location, the different kinds of accommodation, and some good rates.

It is located opposite the Arts Centre, and the very popular bar/restaurant/beer garden Dux de Lux, just some steps from the Botanic Garden, and a block from the nightlife hotspot The Strip, and five walking minutes to Cathedral Square. The police headquarters are also only one block away LOL

Hereford Street is very quiet in this area.

The hostel/hotel is a nice renovated character weatherboard home with 44 rooms, ranging from backpacker to budget hotel rooms. All share and private rooms are with TV, some with ensuite, others with shared facilities.

Lately I had a look at several rooms with private facilities. Everything was clean but also rather dated and basic. The only unit I would have stayed in under certain circumstances would have been the family apartment. Although dated, with still good but somehow prehistoric furniture, it has space to dance, and you could easily accommodate four or five people. But the rooms are interconnected and half-open (separated by semi-walls and arches; no door), and you always have to walk through the first room to get to the second bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. Sitting area and double bedroom are in fact in one room. So you should know the people you stay with very well as you will have no privacy. Although the location is fantastic, you really do not hear a sound from outside, and the unit is very spacious, I find the rate of NZ$ 260 per night very steep, compared to other more modern places I have looked at.

BTW They also have a Thomas's hostel/hotel in Queenstown.

Rates off peak (peak rates in brackets) from $ 22pp (27) for a bed in a bare 3 to 4 people dorm room.
Per room (just a small selection):
Twin bunk $ 50 (65)
Hotel single ensuite $ 85 (109)
Hotel double/twin $ 90 (115)
Hotel quad $ 125 (155)
Family budget room (4 bunks) $ 100 (150)
Family apartment $ 260
(All rates as June 2008)

I have only stayed at some few places in Christchurch as I live here. But as so many people want accommodation tips I have looked around quite thoroughly, so I can give you hints about location, rates, reputation, and how easily you reach it from the city centre. In some cases I have also talked to people who have stayed at the places I have listed. The only thing I cannot really check is the service and the friendliness of the hosts/staff. I have checked out several rooms at the Thomas's Hotel on site.
