Car rental company - Christchurch

by basohoni

Hi

I am planning a 12 day south island round tour from Christchurch.
I want to go for good quality local car rental cos (and avoid relatively expensive internaltional cos. like avis, budget, thrifty etc).

Budget is nzd 45 to nzd 55 rental per day for compact car.
I have shortlisted these companies, and would like user revies on same :

1. Omega car rentlas
2. Ace rentals
3. Pegasus

Any alternate suggestions and tips are welcome (eg is GPS recommended?).

Thanks
Bhaskar

I have used all three companies at various places. They are all good. Just did not like a rather oldish car I got from Ace in Wellington - but have rented with them many times in Auckland, and it was always good. And the car in Wellington was still ok, just not very flash.

In Christchurch I can recommend Affordable Cars:

http://www.affordablecars.co.nz/

We know the owner and have rented for a with friends many times. More detailed tip on my Christchurch page.

I would recommend GPS only if you wanted to travel within Christchurch for ten days. But for a South Island tour it is absolutely not necessary. A free map (AA and/or Jasons) from the Visitor Centre (i-site) is good enough as with ten days only you stay on the main tourist routes which covers a few major highways. You cannot get lost anywhere outside Christchurch.

And there is always one funny story to tell. One tourist couple once set the GPS to the shortest route from Christchurch to Nelson, and the GPS led them to the route through Molesworth Station - which is about 60 kilometres on gravel in a desert-like landscape. Sure enough, they did not make it to the northern end of the road before the nightly closure of the gates, and had to spend the night in their car under the starry skies of Molesworth... thanks to the GPS ;-))

We were very happy with Omega Car Rentals. Seamless and affordable experience. I would also strongly recommend a GPS (we took our own rather than renting one). Have a look at http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/ee0e3/1cbed4/ for my Christchurch tips. Cheers!

I rented from Ace and had no problems. I rented a car for almost 2 months and had the pickup/dropoff was smooth and the car was reliable.

Travel Tips for Christchurch

Bits and Pieces

by fishandchips

As with most cities there are a number of icons, murals and sculptures hidden in and around Christchurch. All through Hagley Park and the Botanic gardens there are a large number of iconic sculptures and bits of iron and marble worked into fancy shapes. In the middle of town there is everything from carvings within the Bridge of Remembrance to a sculpture outside the Central Fire station in memory of the help the Christchurch Fire boys did to help after the 11 September mess in New York, USA.

Bridge of Remembrance

by rozehill

Stone bridge spanning the Avon River with a large ornate archway spanning the east end of the bridge. It is a War Memorial erected by the citizens of Christchurch, initially for the sacrifice made during the 1914-1918 Great War, in 1923.

Jet Boating

by rozehill

Jet boating was invented for the typical snow fed rivers like the Waimakariri River. These Jet Boats go flying through shingle banks, skipping across shallow streams and over narrow, ever shifting courses.THRILLING!!!

This is the Moeraki Boulders....

by canuckcj

This is the Moeraki Boulders. This is a strange phenonom. I think it has happened years ago with lava or something along those lines. Different temperatures with the air mixing with water and of course different minerals in the rock. It has been years...so this could be a lie.

Liquidity

by fishandchips about Liquidity

Located on the Strip on Oxford Tce, Liqudity is an okay place to go for a big night out. Liquidity is a restaurant by day and house club by night. It has a good atmosphere and is well designed including the option of a quiet intimate drink in the booths. During the day the restaurant serves full meals, and at night a Tapas menu is available.

Resident DJ Andy Pulzar also runs a local radio station, Pulzar FM, and he plays mainly House. He is a well regarded DJ so shouldn't disappoint. Smart Casual
