Natural Fuels and the Gasometer
I must say that in my experience, even in the technical professions, I had never heard of a Gasometer. But I can't say that any longer.
A gasometer is a storage tank for natural gas. Tapping into the natural ground fuels that surround the springs, the ground pressure helps force the flow into the resevoir. There is a floating steel cover with counterweights allowing the levels to be controlled and monitored.
The town's cooking, heating and lamp oils were supplied through the gasometer from 1897 until 1940 when the town was connected to the national grid.
This gasometer is located inside the Spa at Hanmer Springs.
