The Kaikoura Seafest in October
by Kakapo2
Since 1995 the Seafest is held in Kaikoura on the first Saturday in October each year. You cannot miss the location on the beachfront, the Takahanga Domain on the Esplanade. But you could miss out if you do not purchase your ticket well in advance.
As Kaikoura is the town of the "Meal of Crayfish", so the translation of the Maori name, the festival matches its location very well. It features wine and food from the region - better: of two regions, namely the local region of Marlborough and the very close region of North Canterbury. Both regions are famous for their wine and food.
The big party already starts before the event, and the Sunday after also keeps the party feeling.
When I checked the www.seafest.co.nz website last time it did not work, so I add the general information of the Kaikoura website.

Hanmer Springs..a great roadtrip and when you plan some time, you'll find many good hiking tracks,or stop for fishing at the Waiau River. Skifields at Mt.Lyford are open from late July.
then drive on to Hanmer Springs and relax in the Sulphur Pools.
stay a nite, camping is good or book a room, the Heritage Hotel has all creature comfort waiting for you. but also fine Chalet accommodation for selfcatering options.
have a look at my Hanmer Springs page
Whale Watching.
by ekhoo
Kaikoura Whale Watch runs one of the best and most professional whale watching outfit I've seen. Using sonar and accoustic hydrophones (underwater microphones), they can located sperm whales, dolphins and other sea-going mammals with great accuracy. They'll refund part of your ticket cost if you don't get to see a whale. The boats are well built and maintained and most of all, staffed with professional and wonderful people.
Oahu Point seal colony
by BurgerQueen
Oahu Point is 20km north of Kaikoura, and you cannot miss it if you are driving south from Picton. You'll start seeing seals swimming near the coast as you get close to Oahu, where some rocks offer a perfect shelter for fur seals and their puppies.
Park your car close to the highway (there is no parking area), and watch the seals playing in the small natural pools between the rocks from a balcony. Don't get too close the seals and don't stand between the seals and the sea, it is their unique emergency exit!
Be careful not to do car accidents as seals catch your attention!
