Travel Tips for Kaikoura
Maori History and Tours
by Kakapo2
-
Archaeological remains indicate that Moa Hunters inhabited the peninsula 900 years ago. In Maori legend, Maui placed his foot on the Kaikoura peninsula to steady himself while he fished-up the North Island. The fabulous food sources attracted Maori settlement, and the remains of several pa sites can still be seen on the peninsula.
I have heard and read very positive comments about the Maori Tours of Kaikoura – I have not experienced it myself. The people involved are locals, descendants of the original Maori tribe of the region, Ngati-Rangitane, and it is a family business. Perhaps you want to get into this if you do not like the thought of attending a touristy Maori cultural show.

Cheviot
by pepples46
is not so much off the beaten path, as you drive to Kaikoura from Christchurch and the other way around...you can't avoid Cheviot. State Highway 1 goes straight through the Town.
it is always my first stop when driving to Kaikoura, coffee break.just 1 hour from Christchurch, a friendly place.
has is own attraction, like Gore Bay, ca 8 km or Motunau Beach, great fishing spot and..fossil hunters paradise.
fossilised Whalebones, shellfish or Sharkbones, dating back over 10Million years and can be found here.
have a look out for the signs: Scenic Drive, worth following
I got my fair share
Seal Colony
by martin_nl
When you enter the town of Kaikoura hang a right and follow and follow the signs from there to the Seal Colony. There is a car park at the end of the road and opposite the carpark there is a bunch of rocks in the sea and usually there's loads of seals here, depending on the time of day and on the tide. Sometimes they also roam around on the carpark, so be aware!
seals
by margaretvn
Go through the town and follow the road until it ends at the point, there is a seal colony there where you can very easily see these endearing animals close up. Early morning and evening are good times to see them. Watch your step as you get out of your car or go on to the grass they could be so close to you.
