Surrounded by Mountains
Kaikoura is surrounded by the Inner Kaikoura Mountains and they are spectacular for much of the year. Being fairly high they can have snow for 10 or more months of the year allowing for some great photos and memories.

About 27.5km north of Kaikoura, along the coast, you'll find Ohau Point - yet another in a pantheon of scenic SH1 viewpoints. In the early morning sun, we saw newly-born fur seal pups playing in the tidal pools, while the older generation lazed on their rocky perches. Aquatic vegetation swayed gently on the swells... All very relaxing!
It is a beautiful 22 minute drive from Kaikoura - well worth it.
We stop off by a seal colony on the coast, and I clamber down in the pouring rain to get nearer for photos. I get hissed at by the large bull seal. Apparently they have very strong teeth and can cause some serious damage. I don't hang around to find out! They are quite tame though, considering.
In Kaikorua we saw many sea lions , in some areas could see dozens of them quietly under the sun, but that the smell they produce is very strong
There were females, males and young that could be observed very close
In this areas where they live there are some algae ( seaweed) very characteristics that have the length of several meters and by the way I do not know how they are called and that we will see them along all the coast of New Zealand
