Aoraki Lodge: Inexpensive, informative, delicious
This is a real home with some attached apartments. You get a great introduction to the NZ lifestyle, good food, and lots of local information. Remember, this is a very small town a long way from anywhere. You become part of it while you;'re there.
You can helibike, trout fish, mountain climb, anything you want. Really. Mt Cook is near, and you are halfway between Christchurch and Queenstown. But don't rush past Wanaka when you head south, whatever you do. Stop there, stay and look around.
