Tekapo House (Bed & Breakfast): Peaceful Setting and Great View
We remember this stay as a very nice experience in a very welcoming home, cosy room, great outdoor seating in a nice garden, a great view over Lake Tekapo and the mountains and very nice hosts.
The art of being a host in a B&B is feeling how much the guests want to chat without forcing them to lock themselves in their rooms LOL And those hosts, Jennifer and Peter, were outstanding, very friendly and interested as well as interesting.
Once - in another lake town which I do not want to name here because I do not want to insult the host - the woman of the house talked so much that your ears got sore, but the worst was that she permanently asked questions, and friendly as we are, we answered them, and after some minutes she put the same questions again because she never listened... Well, so our friends and I stayed on the sofa in the foyer in front of our rooms, and my husband - who is, as you now can surely imagine, a little friendlier than I... - went upstairs for 20 minutes, and during this smalltalk he learnt everything about the history of the town, the family and hunting...
Anyway, as already mentioned, Jennifer and Peter are of the kind of hosts you will really like. You could delight Jennifer even more if you married at Lake Tekapo because she is a Marriage Celebrant and could make you husband and wife right at the lakefront. Worth a thought?
We also got the family bicycles for a ride around the lake, and breakfast was absolutely great!
Rates (Jan. 2007):
3 Double rooms from NZ$ 140 (shared bathroom) to 160 (ensuite).
Very quiet place, house sheep, wonderful hosts and great views.

Lake Tekapo Motels & Holiday Park: Location, Location, Location...
Those motels are surely not the world's flashest accommodation but the location is world-class. They are part of the holiday park right at the lake-front of Lake Tekapo.
Waking up in the morning and looking over this magic lake is a great experience, and you are right at the start of walking and mountainbike tracks, the place to go swimming or kayaking, or in winter, the naturally frozen ice-rink is right at the doorstep. Not to forget stargazing at night - the skies are so fantastically clear in this area that it is no wonder the Mt. John observatory is just up the hill.
Price (Sept. 2008):
Two bedroom NZ$ 120, peak season 145 for two, additional person $ 20.
The tourist flats feature one- and two-bedroom units. They also have full kitchen facilities.
Price: NZ$ 95, peak 110, for two people. Additional person $ 20.
Low season is 1 May to 30 September, peak season 1 October to 30 April.
Also backpackers accommodation and Holiday Park.
Update Sept. 2008
They have added some new stand-alone ensuite units to the holiday park, between the motels and the new hot pools (Alpine Springs) and ice-rink. They have shower and toilet, and breakfast-making facilities but no full kitchen. Basic but clean. $ 90 in the low season, $ 105 in the peak season. (Rates based on two people)
One of the backpackers accommodation is also on Lakeside Drive (just 200 metres further east), and has the same fantastic views. They have 72 beds at $ 26pp, and also double rooms at $ 65.

Tailor-Made-Tekapo Backpackers is a very comfortable and homely place. We stayed in a double room (VIP) with bathroom attached. The kitchen is a shared facilities.
We paid $61 for a double room for one night. This was the most expensive stay throughout our trip. Every cents was worth it.
The kitchen was recycling friendly.
