Renting a holiday house

You can also rent a holiday home at Le Bons. Most of the houses you can rent are at the beach. The places are privately owned by families and most are around 2-3 bedrooms.

It's hard to find one during January but most of the other months are ok. It costs about $60 per night for 2 adults and $10 each extra adult, although this may vary depending on the owners.

I could put you in touch with someone who knows owners who rent out their places, or you can look in a book called "Baches and Holiday homes for Rent" which is put out every year in NZ, or on the website http://www.holidayhomes.co.nz/

Le Bons Bay Backpackers: Backpackers

This is among the top 5% of backpackers in NZ and everyone I've talked to who has stayed there, and every review I've read, rates it as one of the favourites.

Garry and Heidi are locals who renovated an old house and built cabins. Garry cooks a 3 course meal in the evening and it probably includes fish that's been caught locally. You can also do a boat trip to see seals, penguins and dolphins. It's about 4-5km from the beach and there are lots of walks and local artists you can visit.

Le Bons Bay Motor Camp: Camping

There is one campground at Le Bons. I don't think they have cabins but they do have caravans and tent sites. From memory they have a kitchen, showers etc, and a swimming pool. The camp store is open in summer and only at certain hours. Other than that you need to go over the hill to Akaroa for food (30 minute drive).

The campground is about 3km from the beach. There is no "free camping" allowed at the beach.
