Kai-o-ruru B & B in Church Bay: CLOSED DOWN due to Retirement
Update Dec. 2009
Due to retirement of the owners who want to enjoy their life in a less busy way, this wonderful B & B in Church Bay, just across the harbour from Lyttelton, has closed down this year.
There are several B & B's in Lyttelton, and also in Diamond Harbour, there are a few apartments available, and there is the Empire Hotel with simple accommodation.
Please have a look at the Lyttelton website if you intend to stay here:
For sentimental reasons I keep my Kai-o-ruru review here:
This B&B is tucked away from the road in Church Bay (Diamond Harbour) on Banks Peninsula, about 35 km from Christchurch. It is not luxurious but cosy, nice and clean. The guests sleep in a separate studio just three steps from the owner's house where you will get fabulous breakfast and other meals. The studio has two single beds and ensuite, no kitchen and a great view over Lyttelton Harbour. Wonderful coastal garden. The owners speak English, German and Dutch.
The prices in NZ$ are:
Dinner: $30 pp
See photo of the accommodation on the Kai-o-ruru website.
Some years ago my husband looked for a perfect spot for our wedding and found this gem of a B&B located on the cliffs over the sea. The views from the coastal garden over the turquoise blue waters of Lyttelton Harbour and Quail Island to the Port Hills can only be described by the word magic. So we got married in this garden and spent the night in the B&B cottage and enjoyed the delicious breakfast.
If the word hospitality had to be personalised - it would be Robin and Philip, the owners of the place. They are so friendly and welcoming that you feel at home after a minute. They pamper their guests and enjoy a laugh. Absolutely fantastic people in magic surroundings.

Tunnel Vision Backpackers: Backpackers
We spent a pleasant 2 nights staying at Lyttleton.
The kitchen was spacious and quite clean, and there was a dining table big enough to seat 10 people comfortably.
There was a tv room, bookshelf, internet access terminal and well equipped laundry room as well.
The first night we had a wonderful view out into the street and across the harbour from our room, as the hostel is in the main street, but unfortunately the second day, it was very rainy and we saw nothing but grey mist and cloud.

After the quakes: Accommodation in Lyttelton and surrounds
There has never been a real lot of accommodation on offer in Lyttelton and the harbour area. In the earthquakes some of those were destroyed, or just could not be used anymore. But there is still and again accommodation available in this region.
As I live here and cannot test-stay at these places, let me just list them. Tunnel Vision Backpackers: CLOSED DOWN - now: ALBION APARTMENTS
Update June 2011
The building which included the Albion Apartments collapsed in the 6.3 earthquake on 22 February 2011 and has been demolished in the meantime. Nothing there but an empty section.
Update 18 May 2009
I have just walked past this backpackers hostel and have seen that it is closed for refurbishment - I suppose over winter. I am amazed that they already have to refurbish the hostel again, just two years after opening. Obviously backpackers live rough ;-)))
12 August 2009
LOL The refurbishment was not to update the backpackers hostel. They have closed down and created a new kind of accommodation, the:
Their ad is a little balla-balla, as we would say in Germany and I better not translate it. It says: "A touch of New York in Lyttelton" LOL LOL Anyway. Now there are two modern self-catering apartments in this building, with harbour views and a sunny deck.
The tariff for one night is NZ$ 150 (2 people, $ 30 extra for up to 4 people). 20% discount if you stay a week or longer.
Already the Backpackers had been nicely refurbished. The building is an historic hotel from the early 1900s, with polished wooden floors. It is at a good place for people who do not want to stay directly in the city. The views of the harbour are there but a bit limited, compared to views from a little further up the hill.
The location is great, as you just have to cross Canterbury Street to be in the middle of the action on London Street. A delicatessen shop and snack (Ground) is in the same building.
