Travel Tips for Murchison
Murchison a very nice golf course just to the north of the township. It is a 9 hole course and is located alongside the Buller River and has superb mountain views. I have played here once and found the fairways and greens in very good condition. With the amount of rain they get here the course can be a bit soft in places so watch out for a plugged ball off the fairway!!!
The main danger on this course are the huge sandflies so be warned - bring along bug reppellent. Green fees currently $7.00 and apparently clubs can be hired if you don't have your own. Make sure you have good shoes!!
Murchison offers some of the finest caving in New Zealand. The best place is the Mount Owen region which has the largest underground cave network in the Southern Hemisphere. There are several places doing guided tours so check in at the visitor centre for times and prices. Most of this stuff will be provided by the tour operator but ensure that you have a good jacket and warm clothing as even on the hottest day the caves are cool.
Tramping / Hiking
In the Murchison area there are many good high-country and valley tracks. Of major note is the Nelson Lakes region, the Matakitaki Valley and the Matiri range plus the Kahurangi National Park. Maps and information can be found at the visitor centre. Obviously prepare for how long you intend to go tramping including food etc plus the usual boots, jacket and maps.
Murchison is a handy mid-point stop when travelling between Nelson and the West Coast. It is located between two rivers, including the regions main river, the Buller, plus lots of hills. This makes the setting for Murchison very nice.
The township is quite small and has, amongst other things, a nice 9 hole golf course.
