The Awaroa Lodge is in the Abel Tasman National Park, and is an absolutely stunning place for peace, quiet and relaxation. Unfortunately, we didn't stay there but only stopped by for a meal. They had a good menu from local produce, and are proud of their organic garden.

I am leaving for Auckland, New Zealand from Eugene, Oregon in three weeks, returning mid January (seven weeks!). I would like some tips on a route or must see spots. I have a camper van but can stay in resorts or B&B's as well. I thought I would start by going north for a while and then head to the South Island to make a big loop back to Auckland. I just want to "chill" and not try to cram in everything. I want to meet people and enjoy the everyday as well as the mountains and the sea. I am very interested in Nelson, Waiheke Island, and the mountains and lakes in the south.
If you had 7 weeks and a camper van, with extra money to "splurge" on a few resorts, what route would you take?
I don't do bungee jumping or strenous hiking, but walking and wine tasting and having a microbrew in a pub with the locals sounds great to me!
Also, do you have to have a confirmed reservation on the ferry between the north and south islands or can you "wing it"?
Thank you in advance for any tips you might have!!
IM JEALOUS...dawdling round NZ is one of my fav things...I wouldnt plan too much...just take it as it comes...You will meet so many people there and get so much different advice that when the time comes you will do wat comes natural...its sooooo laid back and easy going there....plenty of vineyards and wine tours..especially in nelson marlbourough...and delicious...abel tasman national park is perfect if u dont like hiking to much but want a wee walk around and catch a water taxi home...check out the awaroa lodge in the middle of the abel tasman....take the west coast down the south..i reccommend...and just sit back and enjoy...
