More about Palazzo Motor Lodge
Best Motel in the South Island!
by TripAdvisor Member Sameron
The Palazzo is a stunning motel right in the heart of Nelson. On our travels around the South Island we stayed in a number of 'high quality' motels and I have to say this place was the best. We took the two bedroom 'Presidential Suite' which was tastefully decorated and very modern. It had a plasma in the main living area and a plasma in the master bedroom. The bathroom contained two sinks and a spa bath. There was also an outside area with table and chairs.
The owner was really helpful and had a number of recommendations for things to do in Nelson.
It's not the cheapest place you'll stay but it's definitely the best.
This is a fantastic motel and I can totally understand why it's number one on Tripadvisor. If you go to Nelson, stay here...it would be rude not to!
Excellent place to stay

The Palazzo was absolutely perfect for us. We stayed for the first 4 nights of our 2nd month long trip to NZ and found it to be a cross between an apartment, bed and breakfast and a small hotel. The location was great, just a few minutes walk to the main street's bars and restaurants. We had a one bedroom suite, which was stylish and very comfortable - the lounge was well equipped with satellite TV, DVD player, phone, fax and broadband, the bedroom was well designed and the bathroom was spacious with a fantastic walk in shower. The breakfast situation was a treat, it arrived hot at our door and we ate it in the comfort of our own room. The owners were extremely hospitable and nothing was too much trouble for them. I would highly recommend this motel on all levels.
Just superb

We stayed in the Palazzo Motor Loge for just one night in Nov 08. Right from the very start Kiara and Bob (the owners) made us feel completely at home. We were also upgraded as we were on Honeymoon. The room was beautiful.... really the equalvalent of a five star hotel. Fully equiped kitched, plasma screen TV, all the mod cons, spa bath, balcony etc. Bob and Kiara were so helpful in giving us recommendations on where to eat etc and Bob even dropped us over to our restaurant in the evening. Our only disappointment was that we weren't staying longer. The motel is very centrally located and was quite simply the best accomodation that we stayed in during our travels in New Zealand and all that at a very favourable price. The Palazzo is simply too good to miss.

We booked a night here after reading the posted reviews and we where not dissapointed. Although the weather left a little to be desired the property was great. The staff where very helpful and friendly and it is located in walking distance to the town centre.
We loved our short stay here.
Beautiful lodge in lovely Nelson
by TripAdvisor Member KatyDidSB
If you are lucky enough to spend some time in Nelson, you could not do better than to stay at the Palazzo Motor Lodge. This new motel is beautifully designed, the furnishings are lovely and the rooms have every amenity you could want. The kitchen appliances and utensils are modern and sparkling clean, the bathroom fixtures excellent, including a large spa tub, plenty of room to move about and store your things, flat screen TV, DVD player, comfy beds and good lighting - so hard to find in even the best hotels. Your hosts, Kiara and Bob, are genuinely friendly and accommodating and their restaurant recommendations can be trusted. The Lodge is located only a short walk from the center of town, and though it is on a main street, the rooms are quiet. If you are from the U.S. and think motels or motor lodges are tacky and cheesy - you will think again when you see the Palazzo.
Wonderful place to stay

Kiara is very helpful and nice, the room very spacious, we had a spa bathroom with hot tub, big bathroom, rooms are very new, clean, tastefully decorated and you won't miss anything and feel like you would like to stay much longer than you are booked for. Within walking distance to city center and great restaurants and coffee shops are just around the corner. Great accomodation!
Superb stay in Nelson

We were welcomed by Kiara and given information overload! Only joking, it was just what we needed for our short two night stop in order to get the most from our stay in Nelson. Kiara passes on her enthusiasm and love of the area, recommending where to go and what to eat. Everything she suggested was wonderful. She couldn't have been more help, even offering us a lift to a restaurant located further away!
Our room was immaculate, clean and beautifully furnished and decorated. It was in a quiet location at the back of the motel overlooking the historical street and the cathedral. We had a lovely spa bath and an extremely well equipped modern kitchen area. The bed was lovely and comfortable and there was plenty of room for luggage. The room also had a good air con system. The motel is well located, easy to find and just a short walk into lovely Nelson.
For anyone planning a trip to New Zealand, I would highly recommend Nelson and the Palazzo Motor Lodge.
Great Hosts will make your stay!

Having just come from Marlborough Sounds and staying in the most wonderful accommodation, we were initially a little disappointed with our choice of Palazzo. But after having a wonderful meal at Hopgoods, doggedly arranged by our host Kiara when the restaurant was "fully booked", we started to warm to the place.
At first, Nelson's attributes don't immediately jump out. It is only after you've had a bit of a look around and chatted to some locals that you start to relax and see why they have all decided to settle here.
Nelson is a great place to set up camp if you are going to do a bit of exploring in the Abel Tasman National Park. And staying at the Palazzo, with Kiara and Bob as your hosts, you will thoroughly enjoy your experience. The rooms are really big, with fully equipped kitchens and are spotlessly clean. They do tend to use a little too much room fragrance or carpet deodoriser, but that was easily fixed with a request not to use any during our stay.
Yes it is on a main road, but Nelson is a pretty quiet town, so there is no need to worry too much.
If you are going to Abel Tasman National Park, stop in at Kaiteriteri and take a short "coffee" cruise out to Split Apple Rock and for "short" walk, use Sea Shuttle to drop you off at Te Pukatea beach and walk to Torrent Bay.
Whatever you do, say hi to Kiara and Bob and you'll have a great stay.
Look No Further for a Fabulous Place!

For 6 days in late December and early January '09, we stayed at the Palazzo and had an absolutely fabulous experience. Really, all the very positive reviews that drew us here were unerringly accurate! It started with Kiara and Bob, our hosts, who were every bit as gracious, cheerful and accommodating as others have written. This makes such a difference to weary travelers who want a good bed, a comfortable space, great service and help finding good food and the best ways to use your limited time. They were always available, it seemed, to help in whatever way necessary.
Palazzo's location is ideal in terms of exploring the town of Nelson, as well as the surrounding area. it was such an easy stroll to great restaurants and shops in this quaint, friendly town. Kiara's high recommendation and help reserving for dinner at Hopgood's was spot on, and we dined there twice. Our room, a spacious studio, was exceedingly comfortable and well-appointed, spotlessly clean and decorated very tastefully. Its kitchenette had everything we needed to prepare light breakfasts and snacks, and our balcony was a great place for end-of-the day relaxing. We even used the complimentary bikes to take two long rides in and around town. The bikes were of high quality and well-maintained, and were an excellent way to explore the many bike paths in the area.
There's a reason (actually, many) that Palazzo is the top-rated accommodation in Nelson: it delivers on its promises, and apparently has no shortage of adoring fans. You'd better book early. We will definitely be back! Thanks again, Kiara and Bob.
