Te Puna Wai Lodge
24 Richardson Street, Britannia Heights, Nelson, South Island, 7010, New Zealand
A room with a view!
Coming to Nelson, it's a must to join and celebrate nature, in this case the beauty of the Tasman Bay and the distant Karuhangi mountains. Te Puna Wai offers exactly that with the charm of an Inn in a meticulously restored historic home. There's but three units, two of which offer astounding views. In the Fifeshire Suite on the 3rd level, one can claim the prettiest vista all to oneself. The Haulashore Suite on the ground floor, too, has oceanviews from the veranda and courtyard but because of its lower elevation, can't convey the same panoramic sweep. On the other hand, it has its own fully furnished and upgraded kitchen. Both have modern marble bathrooms. The morning breakfasts are a treat, served in the warm golden glow of the dining room, also with sea views. Despite close quarters, the privacy for romance, solitude, or just being lazy is wonderful.

More about Te Puna Wai Lodge
We stayed with Richard and James for 5 nights leaving Christmas Day 2006.
What a wonderful welcome to New Zealand and 2 great hosts.
The Fifeshire Suite has great sea views. The home-cooked breakfast is perfect. Richard is a mine of information, and each day suggested routes which turned out perfectly.
The room even had free spirits, wine and beers included.
Our hosts even took us out to a party one evening!
Value is amazing, especially to some places we stayed in New Zealand.
Try the Boat Shed Restaurant at the foot of the hill for amazing seafood, and don't miss the Blue Cheese and warmed honey.
Altogether a great experience. Thank you.
Te Puna Wai - Simply the Best!
Quite simply the best B&B accommodation we have stayed in anywhere in the world. Richard and James (the hosts) are the epitome of hospitality and warmly welcomed us into their home. Nothing was too much trouble for them - they even dropped us off at the airport and offered lifts in and out of Nelson town.
Our room (Wakatu Room) was delightful, spacious and immaculate, and the whole house had an air of tranquility and calm. To ensure we felt truly at ease Richard and James offered us use of their computer, music system, and lounge. To top it off they even raised our national flag on the flagpole in their charming garden.
Breakfasts were to die for! Lovingly made fresh fruit salad coupled with handmade Italian bread and homemade preserves. We required vegan and vegetarian breakfasts - the boys went out of their way to provide a selection of tasty alternatives.
Everything about our stay was faultless. We'd recommend Te Puna Wai to any discerning traveller in search of a peaceful haven from which to explore this enchanting part of New Zealand.
We stayed at Te Puna Wai for four days in January 2007, and it was the perfect place from which to explore Nelson and the surrounding area with its vineyards and artist studios. The house is lovely with spacious rooms and outstanding views, just a short drive into town and a quick walk to the water. James and Richard are warm, knowledgeable, and witty, and their tips were invaluable (we recommend The Green Room for dinner, too!). Breakfast is generous and cooked-to-order, and this is the only time in memory we could remember our hosts moving our table settings around mid-meal once two other guests had departed so we could enjoy the best view! Those personal touches and the beauty of their home made our stay very special indeed. Mark & Pamela, Cambridge, Mass.
Te Puna Wai Lodge is by far the best B&B I stayed at yet. We stayed one night in the Wakatu room and two nights in the Fireshire Suite. Both rooms were charming. Both very clean and well appointed. The Fireshire Suite is large and comfortable and has a great view! The hosts James and Richard are great....very friendly and charming. The breakfasts were great with fresh fruit, eggs, bacon and toast. The view from the nicely landscaped garden out to the bay was just beautiful. Abel Tasman is just a short drive away to do some incredible hiking with the most breath taking views!
We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Nelson!
Thanks James and Richard for making our stay in Nelson most enjoyable!
Absolutely Fabulous Te Puna Wai
My husband and I (both from Texas) had been traveling the south island for 10 days. Everything was beautiful but I felt like we had saved the best for last. Richard and James are gracious hosts and made us feel most welcome. And what great breakfasts! The rooms are beautiful and comfortable, the gardens are to die for with views of the sea from several different vantage points. I truly felt no need to leave once we got there. We did, however, go with their recommendation to spend a day at Abel Tasman .We had a wonderful time. I would not hesitate to encourage anyone to stay at this lovely B&B.

A wonderful start to a fabulous vacation.
The start of our vacation and what a wonderful beginning. Idealic location, my room had a view of Tasman Bay. Tremendous restoration, wonderful, elegant breakfast. Richard and James were perfect host, attentive, went out of there way in almost every aspect. Would gladly return.
Te Puna Wai Lodge is timeless, with breathtaking views. The property itself is an icon, but my stay was made complete by the hospitality of Richard and James - attentive, warm, sincere hosts. I would recommend this place to ANYONE traveling through Nelson, as not just a beautiful place to stay, but a place that feels like a home.
Stayed two nights while touring and found the house and the hosts, Richard and James, to be charming. We were welcomed by the raising of the English flag and enjoyed excellent hospitality from very knowledgable and helpful hosts. Highly recommended.
You're a fool if you don't stay!
