Travel Tips for Arrowtown

Some excellent shops

by Lozza_9

In ArrowTown. there's a few good shops - post office, chemist, sport shop, a supermarket and a Hairdresser - loads more may have opened since I was in ArrowTown. This is a great place for a day trip. A handful of cafes and restaurants and gift shops. Very relaxing

Café culture

by kiwi

There is something of a café culture emerging in Arrowtown, as with the rest of New Zealand. So don't forget to look beyond the old part of town, and just one street over towards the river is a new part, with some really nice shops and cafés.

Guided Day Hikes

by TomorrowsAngel

Arrowtown Lodge & Hiking Co offers over 15 different guided day hikes in the hills near Arrowtown and in the Queenstown Southern Lakes district.
The walks can be divided into 3 different categories
Historic Hikes: These explore the historic goldmining sites of the 1860's when the area around Arrowtown became the site of one of the most frenzied gold rushes of the 19th century.
Two of these hikes start at Skippers School House after a spectacular drive through the Skippers Canyon.
Bush and Forest Walks: These walks are on Department of Conservation trails and provide access into the World Heritage National Parks as well as some very pleasant rambles alongside Lake Wakatipu.
Alpine Tramps (Hikes): These are available in the summer and autumn only, and take you above the snowline where the views are fabulous and you can inspect some of the unique alpine vegetation. Guided day hikes from $NZ80.00 per person per day.
These include transport from the Arrowtown Lodge to the start of the track and return, lunch, and the use of a a small day pack and a waterproof/windproof jacket for the day.

River Anduin

by TomorrowsAngel

For a real adventure catch a glimpse of Middle Earth from on the River Anduin (The Kawarau River). Raft through the actual area where the 'Pillars of the Kings' were computer-generated onto the sides of the gorge. The Kawarau River is great for first time rafters, fun size rapids interspaced with long stretches of flat water, where you have the option to take in the scenery, have a swim or even a water fight!

Arrowtown Post Office

by TomorrowsAngel

The Lakes District Museum runs the Arrowtown Post Office (built 1915) situated opposite the museum. This is one of the few remaining post offices in New Zealand still called a 'Post and Telegraph' office .
The Post Office provides a full mail service along with mail products, postcards and souvenirs.
Open daily from 9am - 4.30pm. Tel:
