Travel Tips for Dunedin
Carisbrook Stadium
by allikat
Carisbrook Stadium - home of the Highlanders Rugby Team and known as the House of Pain.
The Highlanders are Otago's rugby union team, so called because the area (they're based in Dunedin) was settled by the Scots and so has a strong Scottish influence. Rugby is very big in New Zealand, and everyone will tell you their team is the best. I would be reasonably indifferent, but I live with an Otago supporter, so that pretty much makes me one too.
Regardless of that, if you get to watch a rugby match during your stay, do go, the atmosphere is wonderful and quite contagious! The locals here are certainly passionate about their team.
Explore the streets
by victorwkf
Dunedin is a small city which is very easy to move around. It is also very safe, so do explore the streets and you will be rewarded with many historical buildings, colourful ones as well and not forgetting the many shops and cafe in the city.
The Dunedin Botanic Gardens.
by worldkiwi
At the north end of town is the exquisite botannical garden. Having a seasonal climate, this part of the country is perfect for growing those trees and other plants common in the northern hemisphere, and known for their beauty, but unsuitablity in humid climates like Auckland's (where every year I unsuccessfully try to grow tulips!). When I was in the gardens in April 2003, the autumn colours were wonderful. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon here.
Visit a Fur Seal Colony
by bsfreeloader
The Otago Peninsula is home to several New Zealand Fur Seal colonies. Most of these colonies are located on private property, and the only feasible means of visiting one is signing up for a tour out of Dunedin. Elm Wildlife Tours’ “Peninsula Encounters Tour” visits a particularly large fur seal nursery. At the right time of the year, a visit to the nursery should yield outstanding seal pup viewing and photographing opportunities.
The Worlds Steepest Street.
by allikat
Baldwin Street in Dunedin claims to be the World's Steepest Street. I know there are a couple of other places around the world that claim to be so, but Baldwin certainly is steep! Mostly, people hover around the bottom, gazing up to the top and looking a bit daunted. Some, like me, cheat and drive up to the top, take a picture, and drive back down and away. A few intrepid souls make the whole ascent on foot, and on the day I was there one local in shorts and running vest was repeatedly skipping up and down the hill, sometimes backwards...He must make that a habit, because Baldwin Street has since been on TV after a group of unicyclists made their annual Baldwin Street ascent, and he was in the background doing the same thing.
A gift shop at the bottom will sell you a certificate saying you've climbed it. Call me an old cynic, but shouldn't they be selling them at the top?
