Thomas's Hotel on the Waterfront: Good choice, perfect location, neat cat!

There is plenty of accommodation in Queenstown, from budget to exquisite. During high season, make sure you book in advance as it is not uncommon to have to face a “no vacancy” sign. I stayed at this Thomas's hotel in two different occasions and do not regret my decision. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I left a substancial part of my heavy load there while going for a five-day hike and they did not object at all! Also, you get to meet Thomas, the fine cat after which the hotel is named :) At last, as you step out of the hotel, the view you have is the one on this picture!

This hotel is very few steps from the sublime waterfront.

Close to downtown, and close to the Lake. A great position to stay, while in Queenstown. Just a short walk to buses for all the activities around.

    Queenstown YHA: Location location location
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Being a single traveller doesnt really leave much options in view to accomondation options as single travellers are always charged extra which always puts an added burden esp when on a budget - thankfully, YHA provided an option to stay and meet other ppl who are equally like minded and easy going ..

Large kitchen facilities, clean toilets - easy access to public transport and a great view of Lake Wanaka.

Just a few mins stroll to the Lake and to the centre of town. Very conveniently located. There is a range of accommodation from campsites to cabins, lodge rooms, to tourist flats. All very comfortable and reasonably priced. For a top tourist town, this has to be the place to stay, however you will need to book in advance. If you don't try anyway in case they have had a cancellation. Really nice setting with a lot of trees.

The hotel was strongly recommended by my very well-travelled travel companion, Woon, who had already stayed at this hotel before and so I had high expectations of it when I was staying over. I must say that I was certainly not dissapointed at all! :-) The rooms I stayed at were very roomy and had 2 really big queen size beds, instead of the usual single beds we find at the twin sharing rooms at other hotels. The room had access to its own spacious private balcony, and was very well maintained. The hotel staff were all very friendly and knowledgeable. They offered us a lot of valuable advice in choosing a whitewater rafting trip which was suitable for us. And it was fun! The price for the hotel below is for a single, double, or twin-sharing room.

The lake facing Quality Resort Terraces has rooms which in my opinion offers one of the best view in the region! It was a fantastic experience to be able to wake up to the magnificent view of the wonderful Lake Wakatipu.

Novotel Queenstown: Only Glass between you and the stunning view!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Comfortable, clean, friendly and what you would expect of a middle to up market hotel. The staff are willing to help and you enjoy a very pleasant rest here, it is not in the middle of town, so away from the noise of late nite revellers. This hotel is the lower priced of the group in Queenstown, but it is very nice all the same. In my opinion, it's views are superb and well worth the extra distance form town for. A Catchabus runs regularly to town and is very convenient. I did find however that the Frontdesk staff were very hard to understand. All were nonNationals and English was not their first language. I have no problem with this, but they seemed to speak so fast, we had to keep asking them to repeat what they said.

The mezzanine lounge is amazing, plenty of comfortable seats, lovely big fire. Dining Room has one wall completely glass with the lake and mountains in view - truly amazing. Just sitting there writing postcards and letters is a very enjoyable experience.

The Parkroyal Queenstown is a nice & clean hotel with simple decore-not flash. But it has been bought out and the new owners are planning to do a NZ $6 million renovation in May of 2005 ! It already has a GREAT location across the street from the Lake & picturesque wharf , covered with boutique shops & restuarants. We had a Lakeview room on the 5th floor the 3 pictures on my Queenstown page were taken from the deck off our room. Update: It's was bought out, renovated & now called the Crowne Plaza

Queenstown is probably the only city in NZ that I would make this suggestion: Make sure you have reservations here. We came quite close to sleeping in the car here... We ended up staying in a cabin about 5 km's outside of town.... The room wasn't much but the view was sure nice, though...

Heritage Queenstown: A view from your room you'll never forget
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Heritage was probably the best hotel I've ever been in. Between the service, the food, and amenities, I do not think one can do much better. The balcony in my room faced the lake, and was a great view to wake up to. The staff was very friendly, and the food was addicting.
