Queenstown-Auckland

by ddoyle2

Hi-

I'm currently staying in Queenstown and planning to leave just after New Year's for a flight in Auckland on the 15th. Any suggestions on what'd be the best route north to try to take in as much as possible on the way? And what'd be the best means of travel (rail or bus or plane)? We're on a schedule but would love to try to see some real beauty spots. But not miss the flight.

Thanks in advance,

David

Take the bus from Queenstown to Wanaka - Omarama - Mt. Cook Village (Intercity and local shuttle in Twizel only) - Lake Tekapo - Christchurch.

Here you could consider a day or two day trip to the West Coast, either by bus or TranzAlpine train to Greymouth, down to the glaciers (if you are interested) or straight back. The trip via Arthur's Pass is fantastic, by both train and bus. I guess you do not want to drive yourself, as you do not mention car as an option - but the road trip is better by car as there are so many places where you really want to stop...

Back in Chch, you can decide either to carry on travelling by bus, or get on the TranzCoastal train to Picton, stopover in Kaikoura. Ferry to Wellington (there are train/ferry deals).

From Wellington you could take the Overlander train to the Tongariro National Park. From there I suggest to take the bus up to Taupo and Rotorua, and finally to Auckland. If you run out of time at Tongariro, get back on the train and head straight up to Auckland. But it would be a pity to miss Rotorua.

I agree with the other route suggested - but also suggest you drive if you can. You will see so much more.

Travel Tips for Queenstown

William Gilbert Rees Statue

by ATXtraveler

One of the first settlers to Queenstown was from Wales, William Gilbert Rees. Rees migrated to Queenstown from Wales in search of decent pastoral land for raising sheep. This turned very profitable when the area was found to be rich in gold. Rees was credited with keeping many miners alive during the rush, as he was able to be the only sustainable source of food (sheep) along with being the first boat owner in the area to ship flour in from the south end of Lake Wakatipu.

This statue is set in the middle of Queenstown, and is a marker to those who pioneered this part of the land.

Browse the Saturday Market.

by worldkiwi

It seems that Saturday is market day (weather permitting I guess) on Queenstown's waterfront. Not being a shopper, I wandered through rather quickly, but there was a range of local crafts on sale. I'm sure this might appeal to some and even if you don't travel to shop, it's worth a look... specially when the weather looks like this!

Great aerobatics!

by grets

The instructor does a 360 degree turn and something he calls a wind-tip tuern. That is very exciting, especially spiralling downwards at speed!

We seem to be up there for an eternity. It is amazing how much control he has over this piece of cloth. He steers it right towards the landing strip, and touches the ground gently and smoothly - what can I say? ("Can I do it again please?")

Kawarau Bungy Centre

by imstress

Even if you don't dare to do a bungy jump, you can walk around the Bungy Centre with exhibitions on the history and equipment used for bungy jump.

The surrounding is very beautiful. You can take pictures from the viewing platform or head to the bridge to take some pictures.

Did I have a go at the bungy?

There is a cafe where you can have a sip of coffee. At the souvenir you could purchase some t-shirt, caps, mugs back as souvenir. Take a look at the video show of past bungy jumpers doing their jumps.

Take a Night Time Stroll & Spot a Kiwi Bird ?

by cnango

While taking a night time stroll around the shores of Lake Wakatipu we noticed this statue of the New Zealands National Bird, the Kiwi Bird. The elusive bird sleeps by day and comes out at night. But Kiwi Bird sightings are rare as the cute flightless bird is on the endangered list.
