skippers cannon jet

by imolinar

I found this combo package that includes:
* 4WD into Skippers Canyon
* Photo stops + commentary
* Skippers Canyon Jet boat Ride
* Helicopter Flight from Skippers to Skyline (10 minutes)
* 5 x Luge Ride
* Gondola ride to town
Adult: NZD$289

It is the only one that I have seen that goes to the canyon by 4wd. Is it good value, worth doing, would the helicopter ride allow us to see great views of queenstown?. Is this a reputable company?. Thank you.

1. The operator is well-known and has a good reputation. I have not done this tour but you surely can get some great views of Queenstown. But you also get great views from the Skyline Gondola summit if you just get up there on your own. The distance from Skippers Canyon to the Gondola is short, so this surely is not a real scenic flight.

2. There are other operators offering tours to Skippers Canyon, for example Nomad Safaris:

These are other ones:
http://www.queenstown-heritage.co.nz/
http://www.rdtours.co.nz/skippers-canyon/
http://www.queenstownadventure.co.nz/4wd.htm

And there are plenty more. Just google Skippers + Canyon + Tours or contact the Visitor Centre, and you will find more tours you can compare and check out what you want.

Hi,

This may arrive a bit too late for you, but it may help someone else. We arrived back in AU today (22 Nov 10)and had a ball in Queenstown.
We did not do the whole Skippers package, but the 4wd drive in and the jet boat ride was fantastic. Our driver Craig was a Hoot, who kept us laughing and sometimes sweating as he negotiated what is the most exciting road (track) so professionally. The views down into the Canyon are spectacular.

Our boat driver was equally professional and just as funny and entertaining. What a ride!

I would recommend Skippers to anyone after a bit of excitement.

P.S. This is not a paid ad.

Thanks. I actually ended up doing the same package as yours, and it was great, highly recommended.

Travel Tips for Queenstown

Booking Your Trip at Where You Stay

by Aidy_p

Booking your day trips with your hotel/motel may help you to save some money. Booking with them is also convenient as you'd need not stop by the office to book and collect the tickets. You'll only need to go by their office when you're doing the trip.

More Film Sets than just Lord of the Rings

by Kakapo2

-

Queenstown has not only had centre stage of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But sure, the hype around those films and tours to the film locations is enormous and overshadows the rest.

Films such as The Water Horse, 10,000 BC, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Vertical Limit and Prince Caspian are part of a growing catalogue of movies filmed in the area and give credence to the region's silver screen potential. Also 30 Days of Night was filmed there.

In 2008 scenes for Wolverine (from the X-Men series, with Hugh Jackman) were filmed at Deer Park Heights which had already featured prominently in Lord of the Rings. Up there they also had a prison set for the 1986 children’s movie The Rescue.

The Luge

by 360dude

Located at Bob’s Peak, this is a series of concrete paths on a slope that goes part way down the mountain side. You sit in a small toboggan with wheels then roll, steer and brake your way down the winding course. Its pretty fun and a relatively unique concept.

Lord of the Rings tours

There are many operators who do this kind of thing in Queenstown and there are many choices of how to best explore it.

Some offer horseback-riding, off-road safaris, trekking, flightseeing etc.

Anything you can think of, its probably on offer. I simply think the hulabaloo of LOTR will die down eventually and perhaps some of them will close as there is too many to note.

A few to take notice: Red Carpet, Off-Road Adventures, Golden Fox if you want names, names.

Daytrip to Wanaka for an Airshow

by cnango

During Easter week,Wanaka Airport is home to a great airshow.You can drive yourself to Wanaka Airport, about 100 kms from Queenstown on State Highway 6.Or you can book a scenic drive through Otago to Wanaka on an Alpine Coach. The coach leaves O'Connells Pavilion at 8:00 AM and returns to Queenstown around 5:00 PM. Whether you self-drive or go by prepaid coach, plan to spend a whole day and be sure to check out the cool Wanaka Air Museum as well. You can find more pictures and information about the annual Warplanes Over Wanaka Airshow in my Otago off the beaten path.
