More about Pounamu Apartments
Views, Tears, and the Police
We were booked into the Pounamu for three months originally, but left after one month. We'll start by saying the views are amazing, but they are dampened by terrible road traffic noise. I suppose if you go in winter ski season, it would be OK, but in summer, with the windows open, you felt like you are on the highway rather than in nature. The apartments are beautiful, but there's just a tiny deck, so you're contained inside. That's fine if you're there short-term as a tourist, but if it's for a longer stay, you need to leave the complex to get fresh air or some sun.
While the internet was free, we had non-stop hassles with it. After a week of on-off service, the management did switch providers, but the system still went down about twice a week. What's more, even though we had pre-arranged for unlimited usage, and confirmed that deal upon arrival, they tried to charge us for extra megabytes.
The other structural problem we had with the apartment was that it's impossible to make the bedrooms dark--the front one (closest to the traffic noise) has a high window with no curtains, and the back one has blinds, but they let in a criss-cross of light from the security lighting.
You also want to time your visit so that Jan and Ron are on site as the management team. They are alternating right now with Leo, whom we had real problems with. In fact Leo got so aggressive, screaming and charging towards me, over the $20 dollars worth of internet fees, we actually had to call the police. Needless to say, we left a few days later.
We stayed in a queenstown for a week before commencing our South Island tour and because we didn't know where we'd be staying for the rest of our trip we wanted to make sure we kicked it off with some luxury. We couldn't have chosen better.
The apartments themselves were spacious and luxurious. Our apartment had two bedrooms, one at the back of the aprtment and the other just above the living room. The only negative point about the rooms was that the front room had shutters rather than windows to seperate it from the lounge area and so could get noisy if you went to bed and others stayed up. Both rooms were en suite with a giant bath (not particularly environment friendly but highly enjoyable) and a power shower.
The apartments themselves look out over Lake Wakatipu and I doubt I've ever stayed anywhere with a better view. You can see it all through floor to ceiling sliding doors/windows. It was stunning to wake up and see the snowcapped mountains towering over the lake. We arrived on the first night of Winterfest and were able to view the spectacular fireworks display from the apartment balcony.
It's a ten minute walk into town, okay on the way in but an uphill trek on the way back. If however you don't want to walk there's a bus stop opposite the apartments or hire a car and it's easy to get to. Conveniently, if you have hired a car, there is a car park beneath the apartments. It takes about quarter of an hour to get from the airport to the apartments by car.
Again each apartment has access to the internet which was included in the base price we paid. This was invaluable as it enabled us to book hotels and excursions for the rest of our trip.
The kitchen, living and dining areas all situated together in one open plan room. The kitches is serviceable and has plenty of storage space, there's a dining table that comfortably sits six and a large sofa with flat screen TV and fireplace.
We loved our stay so much that we returned to Queenstown to stay a final night after our tour and before flying home.
What a Stylish Place
Booked in here for a week for 2 couples. What a place well laid out and maintained. We had the front bedroom which over looked the loch. Our friends had the back bedroom which was equiped with a small kitchen area as well as being on-suite. So there was no need for them to disturb anybody if they wanted a cup of tea.
The living room had a fantastic flat screen TV along with satelite. Gas fire and quality furniture. The kitchen was well equiped with plenty of cup board space. The whole apartment had loads of space for storage. It was also equiped with a two car space below the house.
The apartments are only 10 minutes walk from the centre of town and all the action. So once you get in and dump the car you can relax and walk to all the sites.
The front bedroom you could not close out all the street light or day light due to lack of curtains on the small roof windows. This would not be a concern in winter but in summer time it made for some early rising.
The only bad point was the street noise. As I like to have the doors open 24 hrs a day the road along the front was very busy and the road roar could be annoying.
But this no way spoiled our stay. Along with complimentary internet and computer with printer. This is one very stylish well looked after complex. Would recommend this place to any body.
We stayed at Pounamu Apartments in mid January for three nights as part of a two week South Island holiday. The apartments are modern, beautifully appointed and spotless. We could have stayed inside and not ventured out, but of course we didn't. We appreciated the free internet and PC, giving us the chance to catch up on emails (and sadly some work).
On Frankton Rd, about a ten minute walk from the town centre, our one bedroom apartment did suffer from some traffic noise but this did not bother us. The extra height above the lake provides a panoramic and ever changing view to die for through floor to ceiling glass doors the whole width of the place. We could see the lake, mountains and the town from our apartment. The studios are to the back of the property and may be quieter but there would be no view at all.
Service was first rate and the TVs and sound systems better than home! We'd love to stay in cold weather and try the fire. The only small quip was that the bath / shower is tiled, (grout lines being quite wide) and so not conducive to having a bath.
I really feel the extra cost over many other accommodation choices was worth it. I would stay here again and recommend it to friends unhesitatingly.
A bit of luxury
These apartments are a 10-minute walk into the town, a bit longer on the way back as its uphill. Although located on the main road they were still in a peaceful location.
The apartments are fairly new and quite luxurious, very well equipped.
The views from the apartment across Lake Wakitipu were amazing.
There was a computer in the apartment and we were able to use the internet. The staff were very friendly and helpful
Are these the best apartments in New Zealand???
Well, first of all, we were extremely lucky to be staying in the apartments when staffed by the very lovely Jan!!!
We absolutely loved our time here and had no quibbles about the lack of privacy due to no curtains or blinds. Our apartment was stunning - beautifully furnished with absolutely everything you could need for either a long or short stay, including full washing facilities and computer/internet availability; the view across the lake was absolutely breathtaking and we'd love to get the opportunity to see it again in winter. We were originally booked into one of the studios, but after catching a glimpse of the view, upgraded to the one-bedroom apartment and stayed for 5 nights in total. If we were allowed just one small gripe, it would be the "bath" which is interesting from an aesthetic point of view perhaps but not from a comfort one!!
Queenstown itself is a fantastic place to stay and we would heartily recommend a lovely little restaurant called "Fishbone" which serves the most amazing spiced prawns in coconut............ so good in fact that we went twice!
Couldn't recommend the apartment highly enough.....................
I originally booked in to Pounamu as it was the only place I could find in Queenstown that would allow me to stay for a 2-3 month period in a quality apartment at a reasonable Price. As it was my contract kept getting extended on an ad-hock basis over the an 18 month period. The management team were very accommodating in extending the term of my stay each time.
The apartments are very spacious and well appointed - with awesome lake/mountain views, and so close to town - no more than 10 minutes to the town centre, shops and restaurants.
The management team were very helpful throughout my 18 month stay. Initially there were a small number of troublesome long tenants around - but it seems the Pounamu have put significant effort into cleaning up the clientele (probably explains a couple of negative reviews they got...).
I would definitely recommend this as a great place to stay for business, or holiday. I was in one of the top level apartments which had a good size deck which was perfect for a few glasses of bubbles while watching the fantastic views in the evening.
Pounamu was the best apartments we stayed in over our 2 weeks of travelling through the south island. it is a short walk to all facilities in Queenstown. it has amazing views of the lake and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
The apartments were stunning, clean and perfectly fitted for all out needs. we had an amazing time and cant wait to visit Queenstown again and stay with the Pounamu Apartments.
ps- the fire place was so romantic!!
It was one of the best apartment we've ever stayed..fully equipped,,very important specially like us, a family of five and everything is modern which we love... The staff are super awesome..very friendly and helpful..We will certainly go back there for our winter holiday..
Great design, great views, loved it
We stayed 3 nights and would have loved to stay longer. The appartments come with everything you need: washing machine, dryer, complete kitchen with toaster, stove, dish washer etc., computer, printer, tv, stereo...
The views are excellent, everything is very clean, the interior design is perfect, the mattress in the bed is very good.
The management was very helpful in organizing our stay, recommending nice places to eat out etc.
Can only recommend Pounamu.
and by the way: DO the SKYDIVE!
