Travel Tips for Wanaka

Lake Hawea

by wkcsmt

One of the southern glacier lakes. It is separate with its neighbour, Lake Wanaka, by a narrow isthumus called the neck.

This was a scenic stop we'd while driving from Makarora towards Wanaka. Worth a stop for the magnificant view!

Quads are fun

by TheWanderingCamel

A quad bike safari is a great way to see some spectacular scenery and have a lot of fun. If you haven't ridden a quad before , they will give you time and enough turns around the paddock to feel you have more than got the hang of it, and then you're off. Up and up you go, over sheep trails and along ridges until you may even be above the cloud line. The views are wonderful, the air is clear and clean, there's plenty of time to stop and stare, taking it all in, before you head back.

Puzzling World - Outdoor

by imstress

Here are some of the outdoor shots taken at the Puzzling World.

If you walk towards the toilets through the garden, you will come across a sculpture of the “Three Wise Monkeys” under the “Monkey Puzzle Tree”.

The Leaning Tower of Wanaka copy the concept of the leaning tower of Pisa. It catches your attention once you arrive at the car park. It leans at 53 degrees and balances on only one corner. If you notice the clock of the leaning tower actually moves backwards since 2000 midnight.

More fun at Wanaka

by abi_maha

"What next after QT?"

After spending a good 4 dyas in QT we weer wodering where to head next for similar fun and adveture. We heard about Wanaka ad how oe can get to do some impromptu treks tru the Matukituki valley with some glaciers and snow capped peaks for a back drop. So with no doubt in our minds we caught a bus to the same and spent an eventful couple of days here.

"Lake Wanaka"

Lake Wanaka located right at the heart of the southern lakes, is the gateway to the Mt. Aspiring National Park, internationally renowned for its glaciers and magnificent tramping and climbing. The mountains surrounding the lake provide a winter snow lovers paradise featuring top ski fields and heliski facilities and the town itself features a pretty shopping village with a wide variety of ambient areas to relax, eat and imbibe.

"Walks, treks and more"

We went on the Aspiring Hut walk, however as this trip was pretty unplanned we had no food or water on us, our tour driver was kind enuf to lend us some canned juice and berries which is what we survived on for the day, but what a trek! Truly fantastic, the trails are well marked and pretty easy to follow, we even met some charming ladies who were part of a walking club in Wanaka. A memorable day!

Last Visit in December 2005

by vincentf

Our main purpose in going to Wanaka was Puzzling World, a fascinating little attraction that will amaze you with its illusions and tricks in its rooms. In addition it is the only route to the West Coast via Haast from Queenstown. It is the last town before heading up into the mountains and down back to the sea at Haast.
