I should admit that I feel like at home in the South Island, may be the mountainer spirit of the people here remember me my Swiss Alps. For sure you will find locals with strong caracter but always with an incredible sense of humour (see photos). So just break the ice and enjoy your NZ "Alps" stay.
WARBIRDS OVER WANAKA is an airshow of old aircraft that is held at Wanaka every two years usually at Easter.
The buildings at the airfield also house the New Zealand Fighter Pilots' Museum.

This is a beautiful area and a good way to spend half a day or full day near Wanaka. The valley is very scenic and ideal for a drive with many scenic spots and great picnic areas or areas simply to enjoy walking.
The valley follows the west road out of Wanaka past the skifield and gets you into the Mt Aspiring National Park area.
Many different longer walking tracks are accessible from this valley. Do check the weather however before you leave Wanaka (with Dept of Conservation in town ) as the weather in the valley can often change and while it might be fine in Wanaka, the valley may be a different story.

your seating ranges from couches to lazyboys and even to sitting in cars within the theatre complex. You can get food (home made ice-cream & cookies to pizza to thai green curry) and drinks (beer + wine) to enjoy while watching the movies, which are a mix of latest releases and arthouse.
Wanaka's beautiful! Situated on Lake Wanaka, surrounded by mountains and with enough adrenalin sports to keep u going, its a fab pace to spend a while. its an hour from queenstown and a good substitute if you find queesnstown too fast.
wanaka is small but its got a few decent bars/restaurants, and gets busy in the high season. nearby is the awesome mount aspiring national park for walking,scenery.
