Located ideally in the heart of the town and adjacent to some Indian Restaurants as ell as the supermarkets we have decided that if ever we go back to NZ we will stay in Bella Vista thru out!

Travel Tips for Franz Josef Glacier

Ice and snow

by rozehill

The spectacular Franz Josef Glacier descends to just 250 metres above sea level amidst the greenery and lushness of a temperate rainforest.
Of all the accessible temperate glaciers in New Zealand, the Franz Josef Glacier is easily the steepest and fastest moving.
While many glaciers world-wide have been retreating, the Franz Josef Glacier still flows almost to sea level, through a temperate rainforest of ancient podocarp trees and other evergreen species.
This combination of ice and temperate rainforest is a unique feature of New Zealand's glacier country, and is an ecosystem found nowhere else in the world.
South Westland is situated at 43.5 degrees south, an equivalent latitude to the south of France. Cannes, for example, is the same distance from the coast as Franz Josef, with mountains of similar altitudes.
Running through Franz Josef is the Alpine Fault. Along this faultline the Southern Alps have been pushed up, and continue to rise in close proximity to the ocean. The weather that flows on to the West Coast is forced to rise over the Southern Alps, thereby cooling and dropping most of its moisture as rain and snow. This process causes up to 30 metres of snow to fall on the neve (or catchment area of the glacier), every year.

Bring Batteries, Care for Them

by Lildeer

When on the Glacier (and you should be on it, if you go to Franz Josef), remember to keep your batteries and camera close to your body. The cold air sucks the life out of batteries and you'll have lugged your camera through crevices and caves for nothing.

Also don't worry about bringing a full water bottle. You'll find a much fresher supply on the glacier

Climbing

by didgeridorien

With the Guiding Company you can climb the steepest commercially climbed glacier in the world. There are climbs for people that aren't very fit to climbs for the super fit. You can also go on a heli-hike. I did the Half-Day Hike, because we didn't have much time left and it was amazing. The view gets better when you get higher and we heard an ice cave collapse. The guides are very nice and they provide you with everything.

TERMINAL FACE WALK

by I-Believe-I-Can-Fly

The air was cold and raining when we got off the shuttle bus in the parking lot. It was still another half hour walk just to get the glacier. This stroll leads right to the Terminal Face of the glacier.

Retreat & Advancement of Glacier

by imstress

Despite small advances of about every 20 years, the glacier has generally retreated for most of the last century.

Although from 1983 to 2000 the glacier went through an advancement, the glacier is again in a state of retreat.

Will the climate here become so warm that the glacier disappears completely?
