Visit the Visitor Centres

Department of Conservation (DOC) Visitor Centres in Franz Josef and Fox Glacier are great starting points to get your bearings.
Both Visitor Centres offer interesting displays and detailed information about the glaciers and Westland Tai Poutini National Park. The Franz Josef Glacier centre screens excellent audio-visuals. Up to date weather forecasts are provided daily and make sure you ask about the recreational opportunities in the area. A range of conservation gifts and essential outdoor equipment are available for purchase.

Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier is 30 min away from Franz Josef Glacier.
The Fox Glacier is a smaller township compared to Franz Josef.

Fox Glacier is renowned for Lake Matheson's stunning reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.

ICE TALONZ

Franz Josef Glacier Guides has special boots which can be fitted their specially designed Ice Talonz (something like crampons). These kind of things gave an excellent grip on the ice so we were more mobile....

Going towards Terminal Face

We started with the Sentinel Rock Walk and continued our walk into the Waiho Valley towards the Terminal Face. The Sentinel Rock Walk really offers you a breath-taking view of the glacier.

Walking in Waiho Valley was truly an experience to savour. With each walking step, you 'd come closer to the magnificant glacier. We walked till we came to a sign that forewarned us of the dangers of proceeding further. We had wanted to live and see another day of New Zealand. Thus, we just sat there for more than 1/2 hour to admire this wonder of nature. Just soaking in the atmosphere!

Sentinel Rock Walk - 20 mins return. An easy climb

Sentinel Rock Walk is an easy climb of 20 mins return trip to have a spectacular views of the glacier.

If you do not have much time, this is the shortest walk for you so dont miss it.

Some path may be steep but it will be very rewarding if you could last till the end.

No pain no gain ;p
