The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival are held in March each year. For 2006, it will be held on 11 Mar.
The population swells to over 20,000 for that weekend. The town comes alive to music, wild bush food and Monteiths Beer.

Shantytown
Shantytown is a replica of an early gold mining township. It is situated 10 km south of Greymouth. The search for gold continues today, and the history of those early years is always close by.
History comes alive at Shantytown, It is situated near the site of an old gold claim, and complete with livery stables, blacksmith, fire station, hospital, printing works, shop, banks, saloon, gaol, working sawmill with over 30 historic buildings crammed with artifacts.
At the Shantytown gold claim you can pan for gold just like the early prospectors and you will be assured of winning a souvenir to bring back home.
Take one of the 3 vintage steam trains which will stop at the Infants Creek Swmill where you could take a short walk and pan for your gold nuggets.

Tancred St (Craft St) - You will find Greenstone Jade Factory, Cafe de Paris, The Gold Room, Hokitika Glass Studio along Tancred St.
Revell St (Restaurants St) - You will findFillin Station Cafe, Priya Indian Restaurant, Stumpers Bar & Cafe, Tasman View Restaurant, Just Jade Experience, Addison's Clothing along Revell St. The beach access is just at the back of this street.
Sewell St - The Sheep Station, Westland District War Memorial and Town Council Building is situated at Sewell St.

Hokitika seemed to me just like the rest of small NZ towns. For the short time we were there, i got the idea that this place is the place to buy genuine jade stuff (i was told that the cheap jades sold elsewhere are not made in NZ). We did check out the Jade Factory to see how jades are cut and polished and so on.
Arthurs Pass
we travelled from Hokitika up to Greymouth where we took a side trip to see the Pancake rocks. Then we turned back to Greymouth and across the Arthurs pass to Christchurch. The pass is a wonderful route with glorious views.
