For a small town of only 2000 or 3000 people, seeing Hokitika lit up at night like this was a pleasant surprise - mainly the clock in the main street. I rather enjoyed looking at it. A focal point for the main street at night time as well as during the day.
The lake is a real picture postcard moment. The calm, reflective waters is a good place to take photographs and to just soak in the calmness. The lake is near the towns of Pukekura and Harihari. It also lies between the town of Ross and the Franz Josef Glacier.
Use State Highway 6 to get to this lake.
Hokitika has a vibrant artistic community and tit is internationally renowned as a centre of creative arts.
Glass blowing is another form of art which may interest you. The Glass Blowing Studio sells unique pieces of hand-blown & free form designs, glassware, animals, beads.
After approx 9 hours traveling from Kaikoura, we finally arrived at Hokitika. We pre-booked 2 nights at the Hokitika Holiday Park on the net. being about 8.00pm the first thing we did was check in. It was a lot different to how it looked on the net. A little disappointing to be honest. Not horrible but just bland, not much in the way of trees. It just didn't grab us like some of the parks we stayed at. Once we checked in, we drove in to town and grabbed some dinner before getting an early night in preparation for our much awaited helicopter ride at Franz Josef. After seeing the Franz Josef Top 10 Holiday Park we booked in there and cancelled our second night at Hokitika.
After our helicopter ride we drove 2 hours back to Hokitika just to check out the gorge. As far as the average traveler goes it's not a well known spot but one we are very glad we did and highly recommend. So after checking out the gorge we headed straight back to Franz Josef.
For us Hokitika is ALL about the Gorge and it's what we will remember most.
We met some people at a backpackers in Kaikoura a few days before, we made the decision to visit Hokitika on our trip to the west of the South Island.
They'd just come back from there, and strongly recommended that we stayed at Hokitika rather than Greymouth, as they found it so much more interesting.
So, we gave it a go, took their advice and booked ourselves accommodation at the town of Hokitka, which we knew nothing about, apart from a bit of info in one of the brochures which said it was a historic town, originally a gold discovery town.
