Im in Auckland, and want to book a bus online for 1 adult and 2 kids to bus from westport to christchurch before xmas but cant find a direct bus/shutle service.. can you help!?

Re: Buses!

I am rather sure there is no direct service between Westport and Christchurch. You have to travel via Greymouth.

You get from Westport to Greymouth by Intercity, Nakedbus and Atomic Shuttle, from Greymouth to Christchurch with Atomic Shuttle and West Coast Shuttle.

Atomic Shuttle is no direct connection. The bus from Westport to Greymouth is the bus from Nelson down to the glaciers, and you have to change into the one that comes from Hokitika and goes to Christchurch.

I am not aware of other shuttles that would go from Greymouth to Chch via Arthur's Pass. I often travel on this route and always only see West Coast Shuttles and Atomic Shuttle, also here in Chch.

I would still contact the i-site in Westport to make sure that there are no other connections.

I have just seen this East West Coaches and Shuttles which seems to operate daily between Westport and Christchurch. They would travel via Reefton, Lewis Pass and Hanmer Springs:

0800 142 622
+64 (0)37 896-251

They write:
*Please phone our office to make a booking (03) 789 6251 or 0800 142 622, as we can not guarantee bookings made via email. Anything else an email is fine*

Through the above link you also get to an email for East West.

I have not seen this shuttle service on the road but do not travel there as often as on the Arthur's Pass road.

Travel Tips for Westport

Dress for a bit of Rain

by fishandchips

Many of the places to go to on the Coast require a good pair of shoes so make sure you have a comfortable pair with you. During Summer the weather pattern of the South Island has a North Westerly flow that drops rain on the west and gives the east side of the Alps a warm dry wind. Make sure you have a shower proof jacket with you or better still just have an umbrella handy as it should still be fairly warm. Shorts should be the call for Summer. Bring insect repellent with you. Sand Flies are not too bad in general but with the sub-tropical climate they are in large population around rivers and the sea. With many spectacular views around here make sure you have a good telephoto option on your camera.

Buller Marathon

by fishandchips

The Buller Marathon is run in February each year. It starts at Hawks Crag, in the Buller Gorge, with the route going to the old Berlins Hotel before turning and going to Westport wiht its finish at Victoria Sq. If you are not up to the full, a half marathon option is available. It starts near the Ohika-iti River Bridge and also finishes at Victoria Square In February it can get quite hot in the Gorge so make sure you get plenty of water into yourself before the run (from 72 hours out you can start water loading). Pick your running top appropriate to the day but expect it to be warm.

Granity & Hector

by fishandchips

These two small towns are north of Westport and are known for their arts & crafts. A funny fact is that the locals determine the location of their homes as the number of steps from the Pub! In Granity is the trun-off to get to Millerton which has an interesting old bowling club though this is now a private residence - the owners are normally okay for you to have a roll-up though!! Further up the road is Stockton.

Charming Creek Walkway

by fishandchips

At Ngakawau is the start of the Charming Creek walkway which takes you up the hill via a disused coal railway. A nice walk with great views out over the Sea and the bush clad hills. Once done you can stop at the Ngakawau Pub for some food (good steaks & Whitebait patties in season) and a game of Pool.

Have a look at the website below for more detail on the walk and area.

One of the sights on the Buller Gorge road trip, is the amazing "Hawks Crag>'

It is where the road has been cut into a cliff that drops into the Buller River. In 1955, two elderly prospectors, Frederick Cassin and Charles Jacobsen, made the first discovery of uranium on the roadside, about a kilometre downstream.

It is narrow, one land road, and has a give way sign, only one vehicle at a time.
