Travel Tips for Saipan

Ceremonies

by kenmerk

Saipan was one of the bloodiest battles of the War in the Pacific during World War Two. And, so many, many Japanese, Korean, Okinawans, as well as Americans died here on this small Pacific island.

There are many monuments on the north side of Saipan to honour those who died, and often you will find families and veteran groups here paying tribute to their lost friends and family members.

Saipan ... Tropical paradise

by T.K.

"Daytime activities"

World War II sightseeing and souvenirs. Beautiful white sand beaches,(deserted or almost), chrystal clear, warm, turquoise water. World class snorkeling and S.C.U.B.A. diving. World class golf courses. Restaurants- multi-cultural-great seafood, go-carts, mountain biking ,jungle hiking, motoscooter rentals, shopping.

"Nighttime activities"

Beer bars with live music made more interesting for males because of the approx. 8 to 1, female to male ratio,( several times at different establishments my friend and I were the only males inside with 4, or 5 tables full of ladies ! 4 and 5 star restaurants, strip bars for the more adventurous, more shopping, local cultural festivals.

Banzaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

"Yep, this is where they all jumped from...."

...hard to believe, but when the Emperor tells you "Surrender-is-Disgraceful", do NOT surrender, and the Marines are closing in, what is a person gonna do?
Well they did have a 'choice'---either rush the Marines with their bayonnets, or, j.u.m.p....

"AsCloseAsWeAllowedOurselvesTo"The-Edge"...."

...why get any closer?? It was a clear, beautiful day...no use "in ruining my dinner", said Mark...!!!...

"The S-W--E---E----P-----!"

....THE 'North-Edge' of the island....
[Bev and I are on the upper left side of photo---double-click photo and see the details of the massive coralFace of this thing....]

"...Showing"Them"TheWay...."

...I have been reading a very fascinating book, 'War&Peace'.
Seems Napoleon had such 'powers' that, at the ''raise-of-his-hand'', hundred of thousands would follow his orders...
Here, I try-a-little-bit-of-that...!!!....;-)....

"...Well, TheSea'sSeemToListenToMe..."

...but, my friend, Bev, was not to be impressed...
...neither was Mark, who snapped the picture!!
[heck-of-a-jump for the ocean to make, don't ya's think??]
A Memorial stands on top of the cliff, as seen here, in memory of "all" who fell to their death...

"StillStandingAfter"Many-A-Mile"....yepYep!"

...hey, good Observation!
Yes, thats t.h.e very-same water bottle I took with me on my 2003 PilgrimWalk across Spain along the 'Camino de Santiago'!
It has been half-way-around-the-world, and, still going strong----
---like Me!!

""FlyBoy"......................................Fly!"

...Bev wasn't lookin' here, and if she did, she IMMEDIATELY looked the other way as Mark Said, "just-a-bit-closer, Tom!!"...
Looking back on this now, yeah, "maybe" I could have taken, at least, but not more than, one-more-step. Sure. Why not....
But, THEN, you should have seen the view I-HAD!!!!...
I mean, I am looking s.t.r.a.i.g.h.t----d.o.w.n! I see the water. I see the Waves. I see the cliffROCK. And, I see the waves POUNDING up against that cliffRock!...
There's ain't "nuthin'ButAIR", very "Thin-Air",{know-what-i-mean!}; between me and the deep, cobaltBlueSea. (such a beeee-uuuuuuuuu-tiful color it was that day!)---
So I said to Mark, ""No-Flippin'WayDude!!""....

"YouCanSeeHowFarUpLookingDOWNTheCliffsTheWaveGoes.."

...see the 'shadow-of-the-cliff' in the middle of the white foaming part???
---basically, looking from the previous photo, you can get an idea of the 'r.e.a.c.h' of a wave up the face of BanzaiCliff. We were in the path of its 'spray' while Mark was snapping this photo.
Matter-of-Fact, Bev wanted Mark to capture the 'rainbow' effect the spray was making as it shot-into-the-sky. He didn't get it on this one, but, on the next 12 he shot, he DID!!
[I show this one because the wave-splash is the tallest and thickest out of that bunch...]
Pretty 'cool', hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....
