I had the distinct impression that many of the native Palauan people, especially the younger generations wanted to embrace anything American. Technology like my cell phone and digital camera were received with determined admiration.
The United States has contributed large amounts of money to this small island nation to help build a new road form Koror to a new location for their capital city. I believe that this is one of the reasons for their acceptance.
It is not just the American influence though. Japan and the Philippines have also contributed money toward building bridges and maintaining its independence. Those two countries have also contributed to the influences in culture.
