Comfort Inn: The DisComfort Inn

The Comfort Inn is the best and most expensive hotel (K370 p/n corpporate rate) in Popondetta (used to be known as the Lamington Hotel). I stayed there for three miserable nights. The rooms are dirty, curtains full of holes, the aircon barely fixed in the wall, the cracked toilet bound up with masking tape to stop a leak.... Add to that only a trickle of water in the (cold) shower, a restaurant that has no fish or eggs and serves food cold, even when you are the only diner, and no beer in the bar - no alcohol at all. The staff are sociable though and there is a pinioned black hornbill in the garden. Europeans can't walk outside though except at risk of mugging. Why anyone goes to Popondetta eludes me. I had to go for work.

A Government town run by an incompetent council, filthy streets and nasty shops. Even the Japanese fortifications at Gona and Buna have disappeared under the jungle and oil palm

Oro Guest House: Popondetta's Friendly Guest House.

In October 2009 I spent two weeks in Popondetta and stayed at Oro Guest House. Situated in Kongolo Avenue it is only a short walk to the town centre. Although the rooms are 1950's standard they were clean and serviced. There are two block of rooms and the one at the back set in the garden was where we stayed. Our washing was attended to daily. Meals were basic but adequate. The management was friendly and helpful.
Wherever I travelled in the Oro Province I found the the population friendly and lived up to their name as Oro means 'welcome'.

The guest house is set in a tropical garden
