Iririki island resort, vanuatu: worst stay at a resort, EVER!
CONS: well, where to begin??? The activities desk staff at iririki didn’t seem to have much of an idea of new activities that had started up around port villa. On our arrival into the airport we had seen a big poster advertising underwater scooters. We asked at the iririki tour desk and everyone there had NO IDEA what we were talking about! In the end we gave up and went for a walk along the foreshore where we found the underwater scooter operators, which was our STRIKE ONE for iririki. STRIKE TWO came when we were interested in doing a half day tour of some sort. We went to the tour desk at around 11am and asked about half day tours only to be told that ALL half day tours only left in the mornings. A bit disheartened, we decided to spend the afternoon looking around iririki and port villa. The next morning when we went to enquire about other activities, my partner discovered a brochure for half day tours starting around lunchtime. I was not happy with this discovery having wasted the previous day not doing much, and when I asked a different tour desk person, she said the afternoon tours were always available and had always run.
The room that we had was nice, even though it smelt of mould the whole time. On arrival there was no room information booklet and we couldn’t unlock the safe. Rang reception about the safe and the booklet and a maintenance person showed up to look at the safe. We asked him where the book was and he told us to ring reception again, so we did. We were told one would be delivered the following day. The next day came and still no booklet, we angrily rang reception again and were told to wait in the room for 10 minutes while one was delivered. After 45 minutes, still no book! Got sick of waiting, and went to the pool.
The first night we were there, we decided to have an outdoor spa, the following morning, and there was no hot water! We informed reception and were told it would be looked at throughout the day sometime. We went out for the morning and came back late in the afternoon and my partner decided to have a shower thinking that the hot water issues had been fixed. Still no hot water! Informed reception again and were told a number of other units were having hot water issues as well but they had to find out more information and would ring us back in 10 minutes. No phone call was ever returned but eventually after a couple of hours later we had hot (warm) water. Also on the first night we discovered the top of the spa plug had snapped off so it took 20 minutes of trying to lever the plug out of the spa. We asked housekeeping the following morning for a replacement plug and again we were told to see reception. Took the plug down with us to show them and were told it would be replaced. We decided to go out that day, and when we came back later in the afternoon we had no plug. (This was the whole point of booking an apartment with a spa so that we could actually make use of it!). Rang reception again and a maintenance man showed up with the old plug and I had to physically show him the problem. He left with this information but we didn’t get another plug until the next day! On the third morning, my partner went for her morning shower and came back fuming! There was no hot water AGAIN and no water pressure for either hot or cold. I angrily informed reception and had the response of “that’s not good” and that someone would look at it shortly. I got sick of their “island time” urgency to fix things so I ran all the hot water taps in the place for 20 minutes. Eventually, we got warm water coming through but not a lot of pressure. Had a warmish shower while we could before it went cold again.
Iririki had a fire dancing night which they had been spruiking all week so we decided that since we would be out all day doing other activities, we would see if we could book a table as close to the show as possible. We were told by the barman that we just needed to turn up early to get a good spot. We explained to him we wouldn’t be back until late, and so he completely understood and booked us a table especially for us (which was nice of him). When we arrived for the show, we were told that our assigned table had been taken because the message of the reservation had not been passed on to the evening shift, and they couldn’t ask the people to move. We begrudgingly accepted this and found a spare table outside in the drizzle to watch the show. We ordered a meal half way through the show and when the meal arrived, it started to rain. We took our meals inside and sat down in the restaurant. Within 2 minutes of sitting down, we were asked by a waitress to move because someone had reserved that particular table even though there were plenty of other spare tables around. We were not happy with this at all, and we made our feelings felt on a customer feedback card handed to us by another waitress who could see that we weren’t happy with the way another waitress handled our situation and couldn’t apologise enough (thanks veronica). To top the evening off, I ordered a chicken dish that was so rubbery, it was virtually inedible!
Just when we thought we had had enough of iririki and were checking out, our airport transfers were being organised by reception and we had to meet the bus at the pickup point at 12.30pm so that we got to the airport 2 hours prior of our 3pm departure before the flight closed at 1pm. We were sitting at the meeting point with other guests travelling on the same flight as us when at 12.40 we were informed that the 12.30 bus had left at 11.30 and the next one wouldn’t be available until close to 1pm. We explained this was unacceptable because no prior contact had been made to us for changing the times of the transfers and we needed to get to the airport before the flight closed. Again we weren’t the only guests that weren’t told of this transfer time change. The iririki staff at the pickup point treated it as one big joke and it took another 10 minutes to sort out what was happening with the transfers. At this point it was 12.50 and knowing it would take at least 10 minutes to get to the airport, I was ready to strangle the iririki staff girl that could not organise anything and would not give me a straight answer as to what was going on. Finally the tour bus arrived and dropped us to the airport in time (just).
I would also like to note that our experiences at iririki were NOT isolated, as the more tours that we did and even on the flight back to Australia, we came across so many horror stories from other guests that had stayed on iririki. Having known what I know now, I NEVER EVER would have booked at this resort!!!
PROS: The watermark restaurant had good food and good service, had great views from our deluxe apartment balcony and the spa bath was nice (when we had hot water). The 24 hour shuttle from the island was a big plus for us because of the following experiences listed below.
