  • Man making coconut drinks at the pool! - Port-Vila
    Man making coconut drinks at

My husband and I stayed at Le Lagon for 3 months in a little free-standing bungalow with a porch. Our view included the long pier that extends out into the lagoon and Erakor Island. Although it was convenient to be close to the pool, the noise from the bar turned out to be annoying. We were here on business, working on a television show, and so we should've known better than to stay close to the bar!

The hotel had basically everything we wanted: pool, kayaking, tennis courts, golf course. They had activities that we noticed a lot of people participated in, like trivia and nightly torch lighting ceremonies. The restaurat was mediocre so we dined out at a lot of local restaurants in town. Staying in the free standing bangalows allowed for some privacy and we also didnt hear any noise from neighbors upstairs or next door.

As with Erakor Island Resort, I didn't stay here myself, but I did have a look around one afternoon and can positively say that it would be an incredible place to stay, particularly for a honeymoon or other romantic getaway. After coming over on the free ferry from town, I went straight up to an outside bar overlooking the harbour and enjoyed a Vanuatu Tusker beer (an excellent one at that). Following that, I went for a walk on the path which circles the island. For those visiting Port Vila looking for a pleasant way to get some light exercise, strolling around Iririki Island is a great choice.

This is truly prime real estate. A great location on a private island across from downtown Port Vila makes this arguably the nicest place to stay in town. Of course, there are other contenders, but visit this place and you'll see what I mean. Last time I checked, visitors under 12 were not allowed. The resort seems to cater primarily to those looking for a romantic getaway or to businesspeople on very generous expense accounts. In fact, the resort's own website advertises their own wedding coordinator and goes to great lengths to reveal their romantic ambience. Definitely a couples resort. As a dust-caked backpacker in worn-out clothes, I felt a little out-of-place, but it you're looking for a place like what I've described above, give this island resort a serious look. You won't regret it.

Erakor Island Resort: Outstanding Getaway in Erakor Lagoon
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • OK, I have to confess I didn't actually stay at this hotel, but I did spend some time strolling around the property and I think that if I had stayed here I would have enjoyed it immensely. Despite the fact that the resort covers all of Erakor Island, I still found it worthwhile to walk around the beaches here and while away an afternoon admiring the hotel's amenities and its view of Erakor Lagoon. I also enjoyed the little ferry ride from the mainland. What can I say--I'm easily amused!

The Erakor Island Resort is all about location. Put simply, it can't be beat. The island is small and covered completely by the resort. Accomodation consists of small, self-contained bungalows which all seem to have beachfront land. There is a pleasant bar and restaurant, but I checked the menu and the prices were unexpectedly high (for a backpacker, anyway), starting at around US$10 for the smallest meals. Beside the restaurant is a nice little sand spit which fades into the clear lagoon--a perfect spot to sunbathe.

Large comfortably furnished garden bungalows with separate double bedroom and spacious living area with a single divan, or more luxurious rooms with queen size bed and large balconies over- looking the lagoon. All units are air conditioned and have overhead fans, refrigerator and tea and coffee making facilities, private well equipped bathrooms and are serviced daily. There are no TVs or radios to disturb the peace of the environment. The resort does NOT accommodate children under 16, ensuring quiet and privacy for adult guests. What a treat!

The focus of this tiny resort is its restaurant, located right over the waters of the lagoon under a palm thatched roof. Ideal for gourmet travellers who can enjoy fine meals of seafood and succulent local beef in an enchanting South Seas setting.

Kalfabun Guest House: Decent Budget Accomodation in Port Vila
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I have to make mention of this place because at the time of my visit it was the only accomodation geared mostly towards backpackers and other budget travelers. I had no complaints; it was a fine place to stay despite it's location right on a main road.

Convenience. That's why I chose to stay here. The location is probably not the best, but there's certainly nothing wrong with it. It is a little ways out of town, but there are enough minibuses going up and down the street that transportation really isn't a problem.

Iririki Island Resort is a private island just offshore from Vila, so it's really quiet and offers great views of the natural harbor surrounding the city. The resort caters to vacationing couples of all ages. They say you do need to be 21 to check in. Take advantage of their activities on or around the island like parasailing, sindsurfing, kayaking, sunset cruises, and beach activities. There is also great snorkeling in the area, and if you like scuba diving, there are plenty of groups in the area that will take you out. To get to the mainland, just hop on the free ferry that operates 24 hours a day. It only takes minutes (2-3) to get across to "downtown" Vila so you can check out the markets, shops, restaurants, etc. Amenities in the rooms include high-speed Internet access, satellite television and music, air-conditioning and ceiling fans, minibars, coffeemakers, private alcove dining and room service.

You can't get a bad view here! All the bungalows are separated from each other and are built on the slopes overlooking the water. There are about 70 right now, but there's a lot of construction to develop the far side of the island that will probably double the current occupancy, but things aren't cramped. Each bungalow is nicely decorated and overlooks the ocean and/or harbour. :) On Tuesday evenings, there's a feast at Michener's Restaurant complete with tribal dancing. During the day, you can eat at the poolside café and bar that serves appetizers and cocktails. There are always waiters walking around the pool asking if you need a drink or anyting else. Check out Spa Frangipani at the resort that offers everything from aromatherapy massages and spa treatments to pedicures and manicures.

Iririki Island Resort: a boat ride away from Villa
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A small island only a short ferry ride across from Villa, Iririki Island Resort was a former British Commissioners home until converted into the Resort. With Bungalows set over the water or hidden amongst the lush rainforrest, it is an island resort worth considering. Beaches arn't that great besides for a swim, but the resort still is great.

pool is delightful and proximity to Villa is the tops.

    The rooms were amazing...

    Formule 1: Fairly cheap accomodation
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a basic hotel, but clean, comfortable, convenient to town, and relatively cheap for the area. You can fit 3 people in a room. The rooms with air conditioning do cost more - I think 6500 VT a night (about US$60). The non-air conditioned rooms are 4500 VT (about US$41). Breakfast can be bought for 600 VT (about US$5.50) - all you can eat, continental breakfast (cereal, toast, fruit, juice, coffee, tea, etc) served buffet style.

This has a great courtyard, good for socializing and relaxing. However, like I said, this is a basic hotel. It's a step up from a hostel - you get a private room and bath. If you want a pool and a bit of a view, go next door to Kaiviti Village (but be prepared to pay almost double!)
