As with Erakor Island Resort, I didn't stay here myself, but I did have a look around one afternoon and can positively say that it would be an incredible place to stay, particularly for a honeymoon or other romantic getaway. After coming over on the free ferry from town, I went straight up to an outside bar overlooking the harbour and enjoyed a Vanuatu Tusker beer (an excellent one at that). Following that, I went for a walk on the path which circles the island. For those visiting Port Vila looking for a pleasant way to get some light exercise, strolling around Iririki Island is a great choice.
This is truly prime real estate. A great location on a private island across from downtown Port Vila makes this arguably the nicest place to stay in town. Of course, there are other contenders, but visit this place and you'll see what I mean. Last time I checked, visitors under 12 were not allowed. The resort seems to cater primarily to those looking for a romantic getaway or to businesspeople on very generous expense accounts. In fact, the resort's own website advertises their own wedding coordinator and goes to great lengths to reveal their romantic ambience. Definitely a couples resort. As a dust-caked backpacker in worn-out clothes, I felt a little out-of-place, but it you're looking for a place like what I've described above, give this island resort a serious look. You won't regret it. Iririki Island Resort is a private island just offshore from Vila, so it's really quiet and offers great views of the natural harbor surrounding the city. The resort caters to vacationing couples of all ages. They say you do need to be 21 to check in. Take advantage of their activities on or around the island like parasailing, sindsurfing, kayaking, sunset cruises, and beach activities. There is also great snorkeling in the area, and if you like scuba diving, there are plenty of groups in the area that will take you out. To get to the mainland, just hop on the free ferry that operates 24 hours a day. It only takes minutes (2-3) to get across to "downtown" Vila so you can check out the markets, shops, restaurants, etc. Amenities in the rooms include high-speed Internet access, satellite television and music, air-conditioning and ceiling fans, minibars, coffeemakers, private alcove dining and room service.
You can't get a bad view here! All the bungalows are separated from each other and are built on the slopes overlooking the water. There are about 70 right now, but there's a lot of construction to develop the far side of the island that will probably double the current occupancy, but things aren't cramped. Each bungalow is nicely decorated and overlooks the ocean and/or harbour. :) On Tuesday evenings, there's a feast at Michener's Restaurant complete with tribal dancing. During the day, you can eat at the poolside café and bar that serves appetizers and cocktails. There are always waiters walking around the pool asking if you need a drink or anyting else. Check out Spa Frangipani at the resort that offers everything from aromatherapy massages and spa treatments to pedicures and manicures. This is a basic hotel, but clean, comfortable, convenient to town, and relatively cheap for the area. You can fit 3 people in a room. The rooms with air conditioning do cost more - I think 6500 VT a night (about US$60). The non-air conditioned rooms are 4500 VT (about US$41). Breakfast can be bought for 600 VT (about US$5.50) - all you can eat, continental breakfast (cereal, toast, fruit, juice, coffee, tea, etc) served buffet style.
This has a great courtyard, good for socializing and relaxing. However, like I said, this is a basic hotel. It's a step up from a hostel - you get a private room and bath. If you want a pool and a bit of a view, go next door to Kaiviti Village (but be prepared to pay almost double!) Just after Club 21 and Kaiviti Village Motel, turn left (the only way you can turn), and the Formule 1 is just behind Kaiviti.
