Pineapple Beach - Simply Wonderful !
I felt the need to write this review after reading a rather scathing one stating that Pineapple Beach was awlful. It's anything but that! We stayed there in March of 2003 and found the food, service, personnel, beach (incredible) facility and entertainment MORE than we expected. Don't let yourself believe that this is a 5 Star resort (by American standards) most resorts in the Carbibean are much more laid back, easy going and casual than resorts in the States and that's one of the appealing aspect of them! Why travel a long way, spend a lot of money, just to get the same experience as you would at home ? The resort is clean, well managed -if we wanted for something all we had to do was ask nicely and within a very short time we had it. Yes, the pace is slower than we're use to, but hey, we were on vacation and needed to slow down our hectic lifestyle a bit. (Why are we always in such a hurry ????) We found all of the staff extremely friendly and polite, we treated them with respect and got the same in return. As an example, we drink Jim Beam Bourbon and one night they ran out of it. We made a call to the front desk and within 10 minutes they produced a generous supply. They had to make a special trip to their warehouse just to get it - now that's service. We saw nothing but top shelf liquor. (we are not beer drinkers, so I can not comment on that selection). Regarding the childrens activities, be sure to check a resort before booking. Pineapple beach is not a couples only resort, however, they do not offer structured childrens program, hence, the lack families we saw there. Careful planning goes a long way so if what you want is a lot of nightlife, structured childrens activities, buffet after endless buffet, (we ate at all 3 of the restaurants, both buffet and off the menu and there wasn't one thing that wasn't delicious!) I would say the Pineapple Beach is not the right resort for you. However, if you want a pristine beach (absolutely gorgeous!), friendly and attentive staff, clean faciltites (we had no trouble with the pools, and saw the staff cleaning them daily and why would you want the pool anyway with that magnificent beach ?) very good food and nightly entertainment which provided a causal, relaxing atmosphere (usually quieted down after 11pm) a vacation at Pineapple Beach won't disappoint! Check out their website at and folow the link onto the message board, there is a wealth of information on this resort and many others on Antigua.
Sunday at the beach
On sundays many of Antigua & Barbuda's citizens will come with their families to the beach, and so it gets pretty crowded on the popular ones - like the clear watered Pineapple beach in the southeast, so you may want to go do something else on a sunday.
Perfect Island Getaway !
I couldn't agree more with the reviewer from Green Bay (and disagree with the one from Wichita). Pineapple Beach is the perfect island getaway. The food and the staff were great, and it is one of the best beach locations you will find. If you are looking for a super lux big box concrete resort, then you're not really looking for a true island experience. The people of Antigua are truly friendly, polite and helpful and the management was great. The food choices were extensive, bar service was quick with a complete selection, and you will be really surprised at how good Italian food can be on an island. You will love Pineapple beach!
Had a wonderful relaxing holiday
Had a wonderful stay in September 03, our room was 516, overlooking the sea to the edge of the complex.Meals were generally excellent, plenty of variety and served hot on plates which were too hot to touch. Slight reservation about breakfasts- when some of the hot buffet was running out, the staff didn't seem to renew it, and occasionally the food stuck together as it had been sitting in the warmers for a while. We didn't eat much of the cold foods, since there were too many birds flying round and able to pick at it, despite the coverings. Flies weren't as much of a hazard as the birds, and the problem only arose at breakfast rather than other meals. Oh, and we felt like we were stuck in a time loop for a few days as the only music in the background seemed to be the greatest hits of Elton John - but only "Daniel" seemed to be on when we sat down! They did change it afterwards to the karaoke version of Neil Diamond, and we also had Celine Dion. All of these of course, my husband's idea of hell :-)We tried the Italian "restaurant" (just next to the main restaurant, we didn't realise where it was until we saw the queues the first night it opened!)- good menu selection, and good presentation, tasted excellent. Service was a bit haphazard - the couple sitting next to us had coffee, liqueur and dessert before anyone came over to remove our entree plate and ask if we wanted dessert ourselves. The Pineapple grill was fun, again excellent food (best menu we found) and at least a little entertainment to keep us amused during the meal. Tried the Outhouse once - don't really go in for ribs much, so can't comment on the food. Beers were cold and view was good, but we thought you could get as reasonable a view from the hilltop gazebo. Our favourite food was actually from the poolside snack bar - bacon/cheeseburgers to die for! Bar service - didn't have a problem with it at all. Premium brands were served when requested, otherwise it was local brands. It was a little laid back, but not to the point where it could be described as slow. The room itself was clean and spacious.
Bed was clean and comfortable. TV channels were basic, but had the NFL on to keep my husband happy! The bathroom left a bit to be desired - I was expecting loads of toiletries following one of the earlier Trip advisor reviews, but we had 3 bars of soap, and 3 mini bottles of shampoo/conditioner, which we didn't use anyway. No hotel robes, but in that heat it wasn't a problem. Took us a while to figure out how to get hot water due to us turning the valve the opposite way, doh! The bathroom was quite small, but served its purpose. The view from the balcony made this all worthwhile. While getting used to the timezone change, I was awake most mornings to catch the sunrise.Trips - went on the snorkelling/picnic to Bird Island. Highly entertaining and dangerous rum punch. Snorkelling was good, noone warned us about the jellyfish though! Got very sunburnt that day - there isn't a lot of shade on the island, and also very little on the boat to get there, so watch out if you burn easily - the sea spray is deceptively cooling. Also went to St Johns - we took a detour from the main shopping area to go see the cricket ground which was interesting. The shopping wasn't really worth it and we were killing time waiting for the bus back even though we only had 3 hours to spend there. Our best experience was the visit to Dolphin Fantaseas, extortionate but worth it if you want to swim with the dolphins.Entertainment- well, we saw aqua aerobics going on, there was soccer in the garden gazebo area, and the ents guys were trying their best to drum up interest in other activites. The hotel wasn't very full though, so there may be more takeup on these during high season. Missed the start of the limbo dancing but caught the end (wow!) and the fireeater was pretty standard fire eating stuff....seen it before so not much to excite us there.
Can't comment on the disco as we never managed to stay awake long enough! Played some pool, didn't have energy to find the gym or tennis courts!Anyway, my overall impression was of a well run (if somewhat laid back) hotel - we would certainly go back if we could afford the trip again. It's not a place to go if you want nonstop activities and pampering, but it's great for somewhere to chill out and relax.
Thinking of the Pineapple?
My husband and I havejust returned from 11 days at the Pineapple, many plus points and negatives as follows. The room - ocean view- very good, new building, spacious, clean, fantastic views. Many people complained, moved and up graded from the garden rooms as they were dark and dingy. The food - on the whole really good with the exception of breakfast, the buffets (very bad and disgusting), and having one meal served cold in the Italian. The lunchtime burgers and outhouse chicken very good. The drinks - mixed-beer and white wine ok, don't ask for Baileys as you tend to get the local version which is disgusting, not many of the cocktails actually tasted of anything other than rum.The staff - the guys are great, very friendly. Many of the women are as miserable as sin, and tend to look down at you. Don't try to wear a smart t-shirt for dinner as Attilla the hun will not allow you into the restaurant - some of the staff really don't want to be there. The grounds ,etc. - main pool great (although not many umbrellas for shade - would hate to try and get a spot if the hotel was busy), smaller pool disgusting - flaky and dirty, the gardens are nice, the main bar and eating area - very dark at night, needs more lighting. All communal areas very clean, esp toilets. The beach is very nice, the far end being the best. Overall though the hotel is a good medium grade hotel - don't be fooled into thinking it is a first rate as it is far from this- more thought needs to be put into some areas as it doesn't flow together very well. People on holiday there were great and made it a pleasant stay.
Good hotel, fantastic beach
I stayed at the hotel in October 2002 with my girlfriend for 9 nights, we basically had a great time. We had a garden view room which was ok, the decor was a little dated but the room was clean, comfortable had everything we needed, would recommend the newer oceanview rooms behind the main pool on a hill, they seemed nicer than the beachfront rooms(Older). The food generally was very good, my girlfriend is a veggie and we had no problems. Drinks were good, but they are useless at making cocktails, you would have the same one and it would taste different everytime! The bbq food and wadibe(Local beer) served at the outhouse by Mary is excellent, definately worth the walk up. The beach is first class, as good as beaches in barbados. The hotel is lacking in kids facilities but the pool and ocean is suitable for those with little ones. I would go back no problem.
not what I expected
Have just returned having spent 14 nights at The Pineapple. Found it to be a very quiet place with virtually nothing close by. The beach compensates for the location. Found the food to be acceptable, certainly would not class it as anything special. A number of times the food was cold when served!!!! Given that the hotel was virtually empty I dread to think what it would be like when full. Got the distinct impression that the majority of the bar staff did not want to be there as sometimes it seemed to be an effort for them to serve you or even muster a smile!!!!! Would definately recommend a trip to Bird Island with Captain Savage, what a character he is. He certainly makes it a day to remember. All in all, a nice hotel in a nice location but I would not rush back.
Make sure you set your expectations
Our stay Oct. 28-Nov. 3 - 2003. Be sure you set your top expectations for your vacations and then check reviews to be sure your expectations can be met:If you like a nice quiet vacation and just want to sit on a beach or by a pool this is a fine resort. The food is not very good.
The breakfast buffet lacks variety and after several times is very boring. For lunch there is a restaurant the same restaurant as for diner where the selection is minimal and the service very slow. The pool snack area is okay for burgers and nachos but also very slow service. Breakfast is a buffet the rest is not except for one diner a week, the Italian restaurant which is just in a corner of the main restaurant is simply bad. The other restaurant Pinneaple Grill which claims to be caribbean is bad Mexican with very small servings. There are no buffets, I think because it lets them control their food costs better. We were there for 6 nights and never saw any of the pools being cleaned. The women don't like their jobs and don't realize that we spend hard earned money and many hours travelling to spend an nice vacation. I never saw a smile from one, the men are quite a bit better.
They don't know how to mix drinks and don't care. If you ask for something and they don't have it they do not offer anything else. They never ask if everything is okay at anytime during the stay or during meals. They allow kids but is stops there. No kid menu's, no playground, nothing. Kids can eat lunch from the snack bar but during diner they better like spaghetti with red sauce because that is all they will give you and you have to ask for it. The snack bar is closed during dinner so not a dinner option for kids. Nightly entertainment is terrible. By the way the pool bar, main bar, the Piano bar are all the same bar.
There is only one bar and one bar tender at all times. All drinks are low grade, beer only Red Stripe from Jamaica (drafts) or a local beer (drafts). For lunch at the outhouse you are lucky to get a bottle of Heineken. We never saw the (2) pools cleaned and we all came home with swimmers ear due to the dirty pools bacteria we think. If you use a taxi from the resort request Oscar he is very nice and willing to talk about the Island and all about it during the drive. Shopping in St. John you can do on your own (have your taxi wait for you while you shop, there is not extra charge) and is very, very safe. No alarm clocks in the rooms. We were in room 130 which was on the 2nd floor which had a garden/oceanview. Although this was an older room the view was nice.
There are a few beach vendors that don;t bother and once you told them "no thank you" they left you alone the rest of the time. There are local poeple that use a beach next door and they are fun and nice people to talk to. We took the walk to Devils bridge with a Pinnaeaple beach guide one morning, it is a 3 mile roundtrip walk. The guide never said a word to us or offered to take our pictures with Devils Bridge, there were only 5 of us on the 7am walk that morning. The Bird Island trip with Captain Savage (he really is from England originaly) is very relaxing. Captain Savage is fun and entertaining it is a very nice few hours away from the resort. I would go on it again if I was there on a longer stay just to get away from the staff at the resort. They just don't do anything to make the stay fun. We have been to many ohter All Inclusive resorts where the stafft takes an active interest in their guests. No one really acknowledged our 3-year old boy unlike the other places we have been on other Islands. Our son had a crush on a girl from England named Kate. If her parents read this please contact us. We were on the Bird Island trip together. We have your picture driving the boat for Captain Savage. Feel free to contact us if you have questions or concerns. By the way if you arrive at night and are not in the restaurant by 9:15 you can not eat until 11:30 and then only a hamburger, nachos or pizza at the pool snack bar that is open until 1:30am. I recommend that you arrive earlier in the day.
A great setting, but a dissappointing hotel.
We spent 1 week here at the beginning of November. Our room was a beachfront room on the upper floor. The room was perfectly acceptable, it was large ( the garden view rooms are much smaller ) and always clean with fresh towels. The furnishings were basic and the lighting poor. The balcony was of a good size with a table and two chairs with a stunning view. Breakfast was a buffet which was almost the same each day apart from a slight variation in hot choices. Lunch was in the same restuarant as breakfast and was the same menu each day apart from one special, the selection was poor, but the food generally of an acceptable standard. Dinner was served every night in the main restuarant for which you did not need to book or in one other restuarant which was either the pineapple grill or the italian restuarant which was in the corner of the main restuarant, both of these you need to book early as they fill very quickly. Two nights a week was a buffet only in the main restuarant with no other restuarants open. The buffets were poor, the food ran out early and they were very slow to top it up. The five course a la carte in the main restuarant was generally good. The Italian was also good, but the pineapple grill very disappointing, the food was bland and the service very poor. Both the pool snackbar and the outhouse were very good, but service slow.
There is one main bar and the pineapple grill opens up as a sports/disco bar at about 1030pm, but not Sundays. The drinks are sometimes brand names, but unless you ask they just give you the local.
Cocktails are poor and the staff can't really be bothered. If you want drinks in a glass as opposed to a plastic cup you have to ask and they can be very rude as they don't like washing glasses. The entertainment at night is very bad, very amateur and of poor quality. The disco bar is also awful with only about 10 people there each night. The service is very variable. I have seen worse in the carribean. The female staff generally can't be bothered and can on occasions be extremely rude. If you ask to see the manager their attitude changes. The male staff are better and much more approachable and helpful. At meals we were always asked how everything was. Drinks at lunch and dinner are incredibly slow as there is only one guy serving. The pools are nice, but I never seen them cleaned. When its raining, as it was while we were there then the activities are poor. There is a games bar where you can loan games and thats about it. The casino is a joke. The watersports are excellent with good equipment and the staff are very pleasant giving you tuition when required. All in all an OK place but would expect a lot more for the money. Don't have high expectations!!
Nice but a few problems
This is a very nice area and has a nice beach. We stayed in the ocean front rooms which we would recommend. The room is basic and its getting time to upgrade them. We stayed here in 1994 and the only change was the addition of AC. The food was good especially in the two restaurants that require reservations which we recommend you do as soon as they allow them. The food and service is much better in these restaurants compared to the main dinning room. The service at the snack bar can be good or TERRIBLE depending on who is working. If you just want a place to relax we think you will enjoy this place just try to dine in the reservation only restaurants.
Caribbean Virgin -- need help
Hello everyone! Looking for some help as i am a bit overwhelmed. I was just giving a week off of work and have decided that i want to travel to the caribbean having never been there before...but not wanting to go to the major tourist destinations.
I am going to travel with a guy friend of mine...we are not into big parties/drinking our way through vacation...have enough time to maybe check out 2 destinations. Cartagena keeps coming up in conversation and her islands...but open to all places. Thinking beautiful beaches, water, people etc...the whole bit. Also..dont want to break the bank.
Any ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you VT world!
Re: Caribbean Virgin -- need help
I am not sure about your budget, but I would recommend Antigua & Barbuda. The atmosphere is laid back, the people are truly friendly and the beach/waters are great. For example Pineapple Beach, although popular has clear water and great sand and the quieter more secluded Darkwood beach has a fantastic view of Monserrat on clear days as well as a large, litter free beach and clear waters with beautiful fish near the rocks. Also beach wise, Antigua tourism also boasts '365 beaches, one for everyday of the year'.
I hope this helps, happy travels :)
