Great place to relax and to plan your trips from.

I spent a week staying at the Great House in June of 2006. The staff is very friendly and inviting. They helped me sort out where the locals go which was always great advice. The room was clean and well cared for and the restaurant down stairs was excellent. I spent more than one night drinking a Belikin with Robert the bartender. Prices were very reasonable. I think I paid something like 80 USD a night. The Fort George area is interesting and its a good place to explore the old plantation style buildings from. I was told to be careful walking at night by myself, but I never really heeded the warnings and got a long just fine. Also the travel agency downstairs was very helpful in putting together some trips to places like Altun Ha.

Capture the Sea Breeze at this Landmark

The Great House is a Belizean landmark and a magnificent example of Colonial architecture and heritage. Built in 1927 by local craftsmen as a private residence, this hotel now features 12 guestrooms all with private baths, cable TV, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, hair dryers, mini-fridges, coffee-makers, phone, and in room safes.

The Great House is located in the Fort George area, and is just 100 meters from the Caribbean Sea and only 12 miles from the largest Barrier Reef in the Western Hemphere. A 10-minute walk will put you into the Belize City center, and around the corner is the Fort Point Lighthouse and Baron Bliss Memorial.

The hotel also has an in-house tour desk and offers a wide variety of tours on land, and by sea. Check the hotel's website for specials in combination with your stay.

I like the name of the restaurant situated in the Great House's garden, "The Smokey Mermaid!" With covered and open-air seating, this is a great place to end a great day with a lovely dinner and a cool drink. What more could you ask for?

Unique Quality: This hotel is easily recognizable for its sweeping verandahs on three floors of its four floors--another great place to catch a sea breeze and take a break from the sun. Inside you'll find each guestroom individually decorated, with polished pine floors and a basket of fruit upon your arrival here.

If you favor bare-bones, budget accommodations, this is probably not your type of place. But if you appreciate style and comfort, the Great House will be a perfect fit for you.
