We were highly disappointed with our accommodations during our stay in Caye Caulker. The island; beautiful and the people lovely, however this could not be said of our guest house “Casa Rosado”.
We arrived in Caye Caulker on December 22nd, 2009 and had been told that the island generally fills up during the Christmas holidays therefore if we wanted to ensure a place, it would be best to book ahead. Since we were backpacking through Central America we didn’t like the idea of booking ahead, but also didn’t want to be stuck out on the beach with no home over Christmas. For this reason we looked into booking and figured since it was the holidays we would spoil ourselves and splurge from our $10 budget to $65 US a night. Unfortunately in order to book this place we also had to commit to 4 nights and there would be no refund once we were there.
When we arrived on the island the gentlemen was there to pick us up and bring us to ‘Amanda’s Place’ which is the general property manager. They were accommodating and we paid up for the next 4 days.
It went downhill from there.. We were really excited to have a kitchen so that we could cook a few home cooked meals and a living room to chill out in. Well… the power was out (nothing they could have done about that) and we soon learned that the fridge was not working and the freezer couldn’t even keep our butter hard. We had wanted to buy groceries and have cold beer.. but this was non existent as ice wouldn’t keep for more than an hour. The stove and oven were gas and the kitchen was so non equipped that if we hadn’t of had our own lighter, we wouldn’t have been able to start that up either. The “hot” shower smelled so fowl that you couldn’t handle being in there for more than 2 minutes, but that was fine because the water was already cold by that time anyways. Other annoyances were the large red ants that clearly had not been controlled and the number of large cockroaches.
We also learned after talking with many other travelers that their hostels were in the low $30’s and had no problems mentioned above.
If you plan on making a trip to Caye Caulker I highly recommend it as it is an awesome island.. Please don’t feel you have to stay for a set amount of days. We also felt that we could save money by making our own meals, but we found out that the grocery stores were really expensive anyways and the difference we paid for our kitchen was not worth it.
While on Caye Caulker though make sure to visit Hol Chan marine reserve and we would recommend going through Raggamuffin tours.. they are great!
