As we were leaving Caye Caulker for Ambergris Cay, our new-found hotel mates, Norm and Jan, mentioned to us that they would also soon be leaving and planned to spend some time at the Belize Zoo, located in the forest part-way between Belize City and Belmopan. I was not even aware that accommodations were available there until they mentioned that the nearby Belize Tropical Education Centre (TEC) has about 10 guest houses as well as a restaurant and organized tours of the Zoo. Since we were planning to be in the area about three days later, I made a note of the necessary phone number and mentioned to them that we might be seeing them soon! On the day we left Ambergris Cay for the mainland, I made three different calls to the TEC without actually getting ahold of someone to book us a room. However, I told the person I spoke to that we would definitely be arriving that afternoon and to book us a room if there were any available - we would find out when we arrived!

Sure enough, after we had finished with the Community Baboon Sanctuary, we somehow found and arrived at the TEC as promised, buried as it is in the Belize forest! A staff member greeted us as we approached an official looking building and, after a short conversation, mentioned that we had indeed been booked into their last remaining hut! After a short tour of the facility and then checking-in, we then bumped into our Caye Caulker friends who were comfortably settled into their stilt-built 'tree house'! We very quickly convened on their deck with a few cold Belikin beers as we caught up on our adventures since we had last seen each other. The second photo shows another of the huts at the TEC, fronting onto a tropical pond located on the premises. We had the only other similar hut, but twice its size, overlooking the same pond.

From the 'Moon Handbooks Belize' - "the TEC...was created to promote environmental education and scientific research. Meetings are held here for zoological news, reports, and educational seminars attended and given by people involved in zoology from around the world. The Center is equipped with a classroom, a library, kitchen and dining area and dormitories that can accommodate as many as 30 people. Great nature trails weave through the 84-acre site, and bird-watchers can avail themselves of a bird-viewing deck. Also available are canoe trips, nocturnal zoo tours and natural history lessons"

We were given the extra large bungalow seen here because it was the last accoms available - at US$40 for the single night we spent there (credit cards accepted). The second photo shows a jumbled mess as we prepared to leave, with our bed at the right side and the toilet/shower area in the middle. Beyond it, in the distant darkness, is another large room available for more guests and (out of sight) to the left is the fridge/kitchen area. The large screened balcony overlooked a tropical pond where we saw snapping turtles, many types of birds and two of the resident crocodiles just across from us (third photo)! After arriving back from the night tour of the Zoo, we four 'Caye Caulker friends' sat out on the deck sipping Belikins and listening to the night sounds of the forest until about 11 PM, as we discussed the amazing day we had enjoyed.

When we checked into the TEC, we had booked our single night accommodation, an evening meal, a guided night tour of the Zoo, breakfast and a day tour of the Zoo (this is free if you take the night tour) for a total of US$90 (for two people) - an excellent bargain! By the way, the staff are extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful plus we saw absolutely no sign of either armed guards or attack dogs!

    At the Mopan River Resort...

At the Mopan River Resort little details are important: 6-drawer chest of drawers, by the bathroom ample storage for luggage plus two folding luggage stands and 4 towel racks; 4 additional shelves plus two over the clothes pole with plenty of clothes hangers; 2 bathroom sinks so no one can argue about sink space; plenty of drawers under the sinks; an expandable clothes hanger over the bathtub; four soap dishes in the bathtub so you don't have to put shampoo and conditioner low on slippery bathtub rims; tub push containers have free quality bath gel and shampoo. A cabana demand heater supplies endless hot water. You have to bring your own hair dryer.
    This is a BEST BUY

Each cabana has a hardwood floor, wood plank walls plus ceiling fan. The well-built thatched roof over porch and cabana has soft orange ambiance lighting pointing at the thatch. Netting from porch to inner wall allows air circulation and stops bugs. Cabanas are very cool inside with no air conditioning. Uncut original tall trees help keep cabanas cool. Large windows on three sides plus smaller windows in the bathroom area provide cross ventilation

El-Rey Inn is a peaceful airy clean environment to be in, with friendly staff that greet you and good priced rooms.

The Inn is within walking distance to the "city" and local shops, provided in your accommodation is a toilet, shower, fans, bedding and towels.

The rooms are large, airy and very clean, as well as being extremely cool during the mid day heat.

The area itself is set in a suburban location which is quiet and kept clean, your stay here should be well worth the cost.

The rooms are charged as a room and not per person and they sleep up to four people, so for a room for one night is likely to set you back 69 BZ Dollars (exchange rate to the US Dollar is 2 to 1, fixed)

The Lodge sits among 4000 acres of land owned by John & Carolyn Carr. The staff is friendly and extremely helpful. A large aviary, two monkeys and a jaguar also greet guests. The rooms we used were basic, but larger than an average hotel room. They are all uniquely decorated as Carolyn has added her artistic touch. All have ceiling fans, and some feature a/c. If you can, plan to take at least one meal in the dining room. Meals are home-cooked Belizean basics such as stew chicken with rice & beans, fajitas, burritos, empanadas. Everything was very tasty. We especially enjoyed the fresh juice daily!

On-site horseback riding is a must do! The trails lead through the trees and crops and give a great view seen only from horseback. A fine swimming pool (at the adjoining lodge, but available to Banana Bank guests) features a stunning view of the river. Make sure you visit Carolyn's gallery to see her artwork available for purchase.
